B&M changes since WPT?, Lee Vaughn, 26. Jul 2003 22:35

| I haven't had an opportunity to play in a brick and mortar room since the popularity of the WPT and I was wondering what effect if any it was having on the games there? I play frequently online and I have noticed that the number of players is up dramatically, and many of these players have little or no understanding of basic theory. Is this same trend showing up in the live games? Just curious... | ||

Hi Lee--here in las Vegas it is apparent that clueless new players are beginning to try B& M. i am currently in the process of trying to collect %of increase #s from some of the rooms but they are not very forthcoming. Conversations about WPT take place all the time, however. My feelng is the casino cardrooms other than Horseshoe, Bellagio, Mirage and Orleans are passive and waiting for the customers to come to them. Gary

| At my B&M, we are seeing a tremendous number of unskilled players. I notice that many of the regulars are starting to drift off... -Moz "I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an early death, and I need to cling to something." | ||

| I think the WPT and the publicity from Chris MoneyMaker are making the games the best I have seen since the opening of California to Stud and Hold'em Make the forces keep poker flowing in that direction forever :-) Roy Cooke on 26. | Roy---influential people like you, Mike Caro and others can lend a hand in having "the force' be with poker. The confluence of online and WPT has presented a unique opportunity to expand the poker universe. There are at least 4 articles on this subject in this months Card Player magazine. i missed the World Poker Conference but it would seem that was the perfect forum for discussion of how to take advantage of this opportunity which i agree is even more significant than the legalization of stud and hold'em in California. may the force be with us--Gary | ||

| Hi. I play Bellagio five nights a week. There has been a considerable effect. Many more players this summer than last (summer is traditionally very slow in Las Vegas, but this June and July were very busy in the card rom). . More clueless middle limit players who think the play at WPT final tables is real poker and try to play that way. Fewer pros, because they are all at home taking advantage of the on-line poker explosion. (I am even thinking of doing that myself). All in all, this summer is much better than last summer. | I travel all over the U.S just to play in ring games....but I'll go to all the cardrooms where the tournaments are being held because during that time I'll notice that *that* is when the best action occurs and it tends to bring in the less experienced player as well....maybe due to the fact that poker is getting "live" coverage more than ever before; and while they may be there to get lucky and win a big event....they'll also be there playing in the ring games, as well. For four months out of the year I spend my time in Vegas and California, but when The Orleans hosts their tournament....that's where I'll play because there is just so much action there and the calibar of play is weak, to say the very least. I prefer to play at Bellagio because the atmosphere is so much nicer, But why would I play there when all the games and the majority of the tourists are now at The Orleans? You have to know where the best play to play at, at that particular time. And When that tournament is over, then I'll head out to Cali, where the action is *always* good, regardless if there's a tournament going on or not. When Bellagio held their tournament about a month ago, the action there was great and it allowed me to play in some higher limit "mixed games" that don't usually get off on a daily basis. And for me, moving around to where the action is, and trying to take advantage of playing in those lucrative games, has always worked for me. Of course you can't win all the time....but for the past several years, just playing in ring games during tournament time has been a very profitable experience. And yeah, anytime poker gets T.V. exposure, it's a good thing....especially when people try and sit down in a limit game and play it like it was N/L! I also think it's a "good" thing when somebody fairly new to the poker scene can win a major tournament as this will lead others into the world of poker as well.....even into the "live" cardrooms. 4 POKER | ||

| Hey poker folk, My B&M in socal is not a major one, but let me say that the action is definitely picking up. I actually felt sorry for the guy who set on my left yesterday. Here he was playing and he was befuddled by the concept of the blinds. Needless to say he donated 200 in about 30 minutes. Poor guy. The limits are 3-6 and 4-8. I haven't braved the 5-10 and 10-20 world just yet, but if I can continue feeding on the fish, my bankroll will allow me to move up in a few months. I am looking forward to meeting some of you at Hollywood, Commerce, Hustler, Oceans 11, etc. in the near future. My question is: How long have some of you gone on good runs? I haven't had too many unsuccessful sessions. I know I haven't put in a ton of hours such starting again (about 300), but I am disappointed if I don't win 200+ in a 6-8 hour session. I know it doesn't and won't always happen, but the games here are sooooooo loose. Anyway, sorry to babble, but back to the topic, I think the B&M business is booming and will only get bigger with the new WPT TV coverage beginning again soon. Take care and good luck Finding Nemo. | Hey DJ, To answer your Q.......I don't really go on good runs. My winning sessions are consistent with a few losing ones here and there. And what I do win on average compared to what I lose, when I *do* lose......outweight it far enough to allow me to make a good living. I think the longest winning streak I ever had was going around 30 days without a loss back around 7 years ago....but the only thing matters to me, is that I stay consistent, while allowing myself to play in games that I can profit even *more* from like playing in a higher limit game because the potential earn is high and my bankroll can handle the losses if I chose to play there. I always play in games that I think I can beat, and even if the limits are higher.....if I can afford to be there, and I feel I'm putting myself in a good spot to make money, (while still possessing strong discipline), then I'll play there. See you in Cali! 4P- | ||

| I played in a B&M tourney a week ago, and the director mentioned that there were seven new players who said they had been watching the WPT and decided to try a tournament. This is a small weekly tournament, so I think the amount of new players coming to the game is significant. | ||
