Folding the winner, Roy Cooke, 26. Jul 2003 22:06

Recently Barry Tanenbaum posted about two hands in which he folded the winning hand. He questioned both decisions!

If you never fold a winner you are calling way too tight. Many situations occur in poker in which you are getting 6-1 odds from the pot and the chance you have your opponent beat is 10%. You are correct in folding, yet you know you are folding the winner 10% of the time.

That said, if you do fold a winner......do what Barry did and review the situation and see if you still feel comfortable in retrospect with your decision. Folding when you should call with a winning hand can be a large error in the way of expectation.

Indeed. One catastrophic fold costs you a lot, but a huge number of incorrect river calls cost you even more. When in doubt call on the really big ones and fold on the really small ones.
