Online poker as a part time job, mrbippy, 26. Jul 2003 16:02

I've been considering getting into some real money games on Party or Poker Stars to see if I could supplement my household income. Low limit stuff of course. My question is how many of y'all actually show a profit at months or years end?

I'm pretty new to serious poker playing. I've been playing since I was 10 or so but having read Sklansky and the posts on this site I've realized that there's more to poker than just the cards.

I do pretty well with the play money but I understand that isn't anything like the real deal. Do I need more training or should I give it a go?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

You should give it a go....but start small and work your way up from there....keep reading and studying!

Few players beat the game over the course of time. That said, those that work hard and possess the right skill set do......Learn the skills and you might do much more than supplement your income.

Mrbippy,

If you feel that you are ready to take the plunge into online poker then I would say give it a go, but be sure to start at the smaller limits and work your way up from there. I have been supplementing my income for nearly 3 years by playing online poker, but I will admit that at the beginning it was not as easy as I thought it would be. It definitely took some time to get used to and the first few months were without question a learning process for me, but in due time I was able to discipline myself, enabling me to beat the game on a regular basis. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of discipline when it comes to online poker. I have come across many a bad player who doesn't have a clue what he is doing and doesn't realize the value of the "cyber chip." Always remember that you are playing with REAL money. FOLD when you know that you are beat. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen people call all the way with KK and an ace on board just to show the winner his wired kings. Be wise with your money, and always maintain a respectable degree of discipline. If you are able to do so, there is no reason why you cannot successfully supplement your income playing online poker. Good luck.

I would agree you should give it a shot. Like Roy and mrbibby have said, start at the lower limits and don't be in a rush to move up. I have been playing online for about a year and a half now and have had a great time and consistently earned a steady profit. (my wife had a whole new appreciation for the time I spent playing online when I suprised her w/ an anniversary trip paid for w/ part of my online winnings. lol)

This is a great time to start playing online. The number of players has increased dramatically thanks in great part to the WPT, and many of them are new to the game so the opportunity is there for a solid player. Combine that w/ one of the many deposit bonus's and your off to a good start. Whatever you do, have fun and good luck.

I wouldn't think of it as a part time job yet. It's going to be more of an on the job training class that you will be paying for in the beginning. Even in low-limit, be ready to spend a few hundred each month in the beginning. This way, you won't be deluding yourself. Then, after three month's start evaluating your game and find your leaks. If you can't, then you can get some pro help. or check these posts..

right now, I've got all ten fingers trying to fix all the leaks in my game, so I know how it feels..

Good luck..

I would suggest that you play small potatoes there for a while and build an online bankroll up from what you have now. Then when you move up in limits and start making real money then start getting it sent to you. To just jump into higher limits and "give it a shot" is dangerous.
