River: Call or Fold? Hand 2, Barry T, 26. Jul 2003 04:32
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
Hi. Here is the second call or fold hand:

I have Qd9d in the cutoff, and I open raise. Only the BB (the same weak but unpredictable player) calls. Flop is 8910 rainbow, with one of my suit. BB bets right out at me. I decide to call, even though I now think a raise would have been better. Another eight comes on the turn, and he bets again. I call. A third eight on the river and he checks. I figure that means he was betting a straight, or at least not a 10, and I bet. He check-raises. Fold or call?

Thanks.

If he's half as predictable as you put him on, then he's beaten you, hasn't he?

Another interesting situation.....and question.

I think my decision on the end would relate to my thoughts on the propensity of the player to bluff in the situation that is current. I do not think a player would make that play as a bluff unless he had seen an identical play in which Barry had folded the river.

Barry states this play as "unpredictable"....Does that mean goofy? If I thought the player was goofy I would pay this off.......If I thought this player was rational and had not seen me make a fold play under similar conditions I would muck the hand.

Hi. OK, he was goofy. I did not believe he was bluffing, and I was right. But I also had him beat. I threw away my hand, and he proudly showed me his pocket sevens. He made a full house, thought it was good, and check-raised with it. Go figure.

But I was wrong (again) to muck, I should just call goofy guys.

By the way, this was the first time I saw him check-raise the river. Later he did it three more times, always with a winner.

But I will have to add call goofy guys to my playbook.

Hi Barry

I think you need to be more liberal in calling goofy guys. With some people, I have trouble putting them on a logical thought (In some cases I don't think they have any :-).....Those types of people tend to get paid off more by me....Of course you have to recognize goofy people when you meet them.........Perhaps that is much more in my element than yours :-)

Hey, I knew he was goofy, but I knew he was check-raising with what he was sure was the best hand. I forgot he was so goofy he did not realize his full house was no good.

Live and learn. I did call his river raise in a hand later on, but he showed me a wheel for the winner. So I got caught zagging and zigging.

I think that is a really bad river bet. There is very little he can call you with that you can beat. By not betting that river you don't have to make this difficult decision.
