AA and KK in early position NL tourney ?, spawgan, 24. Jul 2003 18:40 | ||

| I need some help on how to play these hands in early position. Do you go all in, make a modest raise. Recently I have been putting in modest raises trying to build the pot, get a lot of callers and eventually someone is outdrawing me. However when I go all in, particularly at early times in the tourney everyone folds. I want to make these hands as profitable as I can, any help would be appreciated. | ||

| hmmm... what do you mean by a modest raise? I will generally raise these anywhere from 3X the BB to a pot-sized bet, depending on how big the blinds are. That will usually fold-off most people with limp-only and crap hands. Then, if someone re-raises, I will push all-in. This, of course, is just a general strategy, and I won't always play them this way... and, also, NL play is not my strong-suit... so you can take this with a grain of salt. -Moz "May your chips never fall from a cow." | ||

| You must raise with KK, but occassionally (and I mean REALLY occassionally), you can limp with AA hoping for a raise behind you so you can limp re-raise. But, in general, I follow the 3x or 4x BB strategy and then look for a favorable flop to make a big bet if checked too. Most of the time early on, you are going to only win small pots with these hands and that is far better than allowing someone to outdraw you cheaply where you lose a bundle. | ||

| Hi. Early in the tournament, when stacks are deep with respect to blinds, a modest raise is correct. While conventional wisdom tells us to raise 3x to 4x the blind (actually, 3.5x) a raise of 2.5x - 3x is better with AA and KK (and several other hands) in early position. You would like a raise, or at least to get played with by one person. You then want to give then bad odds to draw out on you aftert he flop, which within your control. depending on the flop. Typically, you shouold make a slightly larger than pot sized bet. Later in the tournament, it becomes more correct to make a 3x-4x raise , and, if that represents more than half of your chips, to go all in. If you are frequently getting drawn out on, you are being very unlucky. Stick with it! BarryT | ||
