Attitude adjustment needed..., MozMan, 24. Jul 2003 15:15

ok, this kinda snuck up on me, and I think I may need an attitude adjustment or something.

For about a week now, I find myself sitting at games (both online and B&M) thinking very negatively.. mostly about the other players, and some about my own play.

It's having a terrible effect on my game. I keep looking back at my play records, and thinking, "Why the hell did I do THAT!"

Is this an extended state of low-grade tilt? Am I just off somehow, and need to meditate or something? I can't pick out any particular event that got me here. Right now I feel ok, and I'm looking forward to a couple hours at the tables online tonight, but I've got this nagging feeling that my attitude will be all wrong when I get there and I'll start throwing chips away again.

Any idears? Anyone?

Take up running?

This sounds kind of nuts, but attitude has more to do with how you feel about life away from the table than how you feel when you're there. A good four miles of pavement under your feet on a breezy moonlit night a couple nights a week and you'll be a new man. It'll take six weeks for it to actually take, but it's been proven that endorphins from exercise improve mood and increase blood flow to the brain. Just my two pennies.

wow. I hadn't even considered that it might be other stuff in my life that's affecting my game. Like most men, I'm normally so good at "compartmentalizing" my life... I do have some major stress right now (job change, school). It's all good stuff, but still stress.

I think jogging, in particular, is out of the question for two reasons: 1) I'm a smoker and avoid anything healthy (like exercise) like the plague, and 2) I live in Arizona, and right now temps don't go below 100 until about 3 am... Actually, though, I think a nice post-sunset walk around the park with my kids and plenty of water would make a good substitution.

Thanx for the insight, piantballgirl. I really appreciate it.

Perhaps also some ::: shudder ::: exercise that does not require me to be outside in the heat, as well... I'm sure there is something in the house I could do until cooler weather comes around... hmm...

Hey Moz,

Yeah...PBgirl is right. Exersize is vey important, but you don't have to run in order to achieve the positive results that come from it. Even just a small amount of cardio a day (like a brisk walk, or if you prefer to stay indoors, a fast pace walk on a treadmill or exersize bike) does wonders for the body AND mind. Actually, the effect that it has on your mind (endorphines/amino acids) will give you a more positive outlook right away. Even though the results of actually losing weight/toning up etc. may take some time.......the *mental* effect that takes place (all being positive), happens immediately. And if you feel better mentally, and de-clutter your mind, you'll start to feel and think more positively about other things in your life.....not just your appearance. It is a real stress reliever and it boosts your spirit.......so when you need to think really positive and make clear-minded decisions (poker), and feel really good about yourself (which should be ALWAYS)......try adding a regular exersize program to your schedule (if it's not there already), and you'll see AND feel the results in no time. And when you play poker (or anything else that requires your complete focus and positive/clear thinking).........exersizing is one of the *best* ways to achieve all that. You can run, walk, ride a bike, play sports, jump rope....whatever........"just do it" (as Nike suggests)!! (And this has been a nice reminder for ME, as I have been getting pretttty lazy myself)! ............Good luck Moz..

Thanx 4-

You are both absolutely right, I know. I am basically a lazy person, and have been lucky in the past in that I often had jobs that were physically demanding (i.e., carpentry, chimney cleaning, loading airlplanes, etc...) and got my exercise by default. Now that I work behind a desk all day, I get very little exercise, and I should be making up for that. I should also quit smoking...

I should quit also Moz, and that's why it's even more important for me to exersize on a daily basis as smoking does weaken your circulation amoung other things. I quit for 7 years and then went back, (UGH).....very bad mistake.....dumb, dumb, dumb!

But on that note, I'd like to thank the people who decided to *bann* smoking from all the poker rooms that I play at....ty, ty, ty. I now smoke alot less because of it!

YOU SHOULD BOTH QUIT!! How many big bets per day would you save if you quit smoking? And the health benefits? +EV all the way around!

Moz-

I am in the same spot as you currently. I have lost a ton of $$ online in the last month, mostly due to poor attitude on my part. Playing agains the same players, just not making bad decisions. Anyway, I have decided to take some time away from the game as I find that when i play too often, I run into a rut like this. So, in addition to the exercise, sometimes you just need to push away from the felt (or monitor) for a little while and focus on something else.

Good luck with it.
