FIBO:

I have been playing on it too...I tried to get a sense from the others if the program was realistic and didn't really get a cohesive response.

For me, its seems like if you play conservatively, its relatively easy to get to the final table by just playing premium hands and waiting for other players to bust out.

So far playing 7 times I have had similar results to yourself but have now made the final table 4 straight times.

Each time I have been very shortstacked at the final table (shortest stack each time) and attempted one vain glorious all in move with a half decent hand to try and double up. Also, the times I didn't make the final table I got busted out after moving all in and taking a bad beat on the final card.

If only getting to the final table at a large tournament was as easy playing very conservatively, getting to the last 40 and waiting for everyone else to bust out. It seems on the software, that the player pool shrinks much quicker than the blinds escalate.

So to answer your question - I have no idea how realistic it is (I am not nearly experienced enough in live tournaments to make that assessment). I doubt highly that making the final table in a real live 1000 person tournament (much less the WSOP) is as easy as the software program. But, I think the progam seems to accurately reflect real situations you would encounter and how to play certain hands in certain situations.

I like the program a lot though.

Hey Fibo and mroban. This is a bit long so bear with me. I think that Wilson's Tournament Software is a great learning tool...one that few people actually take full advantage with. Comments within.

My apologies mroban. I didn't realize that was what you had asked. I don't think that it is realistic. I do think however...that it is the most realistic program out there to date. If you want to wade through a bunch of opinions (some helpful...some off topic) you can try these links.

If you would rather not bother with it and have a direct question...I will give it my best shot to answer it.

I (kind of) agree with that statement. However, I don't think that getting to the final table should be your goal. I find it is slightly more difficult getting to the final table with enough money to assure a top three finish. I would also suggest playing (and mastering) each skill level. Just because the lower levels are easier, doesn't mean you can't learn from them. It is likely you are going to enter many smaller tournaments where the majority of people will play nonsensically and or badly.

> So far playing 7 times I have had similar results to yourself but have now made the final table 4 straight times.<

Again, the final table should not be your goal. You need to have money when you get there. I have played 200 tournaments at each level (fastest settings of course) just with the WSOP settings with 70 tables. I have played another 1000 or so with other various settings. (If you truly want to succeed with tournament poker...you will likely have to start small.) Go to your local casino and pick up a tourney sheet. Plug all the required info in and practice. Keep a notebook handy by the computer. Jot down hands you bust with, hands that gave you trouble and note the position you were in with relative stack size for the level and anything else you think may help.

Yeah...that's poker. You are going to need to figure out how to get to the final table with money and protect your stack at the same time. When I first started playing the Wilson Software, I too encountered the final table syndrome. I realized that if I was going to have success (win the real money) I would have to re-tool my game. For me, this involved playing a great deal more hands and taking a few more risks. I was playing way too tight. This led to a flurry of early bust outs for me, until I was able to find a happy medium.

Actually there are quite a few players who do show up to final tables quite frequently, who never win a tournament...unless the deck runs them over. Some say that they lack a "killer" instinct. I think that they have an actual problem with their game. Go ahead and make adjustments to the blind/times and note how this affects the player pool.

That's for sure.

Yes it does...and me too. - Nathaniel Brous

I can beat the hell out of TTH and I would imagine that any serious winning player has no problem with it. There just aren't computer players out there who are advanced enough to beat good humans.

That said, if you are good enough to cripple TTH, then you are probably good enough to play against real live bad players and make money.
