Hey guys,

Thanks for helping me out on the betting strcutures yesterday. Now, I have bounced around the net looking at all the different Poker formats that are played. Can someone advise which is the most common. The reason for this is as we invite others to join our game of poker I want the most commonly recognised format to be played so the chances are that they will know the game we play. Also should I ever get to play at a casino I would like to have experience at the game they are likely to play.

Also would this be the most common "friends around a table every Friday night" type format too?

Can anyone advise. Love the forum .....Oscar

If you're referring to what types of poker games are the most commonly spread, alot of that will determine on the area in which you from. But the most common and popular game is Texas Hold-Em, that consists of a 10 player table max with a small blind and a big blind.

Followed by Seven card stud (8 player max w/an ante structure).

Omaha hi-lo (10 player max w/blinds posted).

seven card stud 8 or better (8 player max w/an ante structure).

There are also some other poker games as well, but these will be the most common.

Alot of times when people play in home games, they tend to play with wild cards and other types like crazy pineapple, and Guts poker, as these games tend to "spice" things up a bit........but if you want to keep it more true to real poker, and games that are most commonly spread in the casinos, then stick to the ones mentioned above so you can learn the game that you will eventually play in a live" poker room. You'll gain much more experience that way.

Thank you very much. As an obvious novice as are all my friends who are joining me it is very useful to get the basics right. I suppose I am looking for the easiest format for the novices to keep up with....Oscar

Yeah I know Im rambling and thinking aloud, but as complete novices the easiest game to help us concentrate on the hands as opposed to the format would probably be best. After a few weeks we can start to look at other formats that may be more fun after we have semi-mastered the basics....Oscar

No problem Oscar......feel free to ask as many questions as you would like to.

I think you'll find Hold-em to be the most easiest game to play, as it's the quickest...you only hold 2 cards.....and it's usually just one winner per hand (high only poker), opposed to Omaha hi-lo and stud 8 or better that consists of split pots, (1/2 goes to the low hand, and the other 1/2 goes to the high half). And for that reason alone...those two games become more complicated.

I believe that learning seven card stud is also an important game to gain experience/knowledge at, because it truly is the foundation of all poker games. Although it is not popular with the on-line sites...it is still played in casinos, and like I mentioned earler, if you live in an area that spreads it, it's a good game to understand. they spread it alot on the east coast,U.S, and they spread it Vegas and Cali as well...... and it can be beneficial to you to understand more than one game! I would suggest you purchase some "poker for beginners" books as this will help you a great deal.

That guy who said to get "poker for dummies" by Lou Krieger was dead on the money. If you bought that for 30 bucks Canadian (I don't know what it costs American) it will easily make you that much the first time you play with your friends AND will teach you everything you need to know. I think when you asked about betting structure you meant antes and blinds right? Well here is as much as I know. Generally you shouldn't be using antes. Most games use blinds. A blind is a "blind bet" that is made prior to the deal. The blinds are done by the two players to the left of the dealer. The first to the left of the dealer is the "little blind" and the player two to the left of the dealer (left of the little blind) is the "big blind" The big blind postes one bet, the little blind postes 1/2 of a bet. Now, these are "forced bets" as such they are fully active. The cards are dealt and now one assumes that the little blind and big blind have already gone and made those bets. The player left of the big blind now goes, he can either, call the bet made by the big blind, fold, or raise. It goes around the table. The little blind has already put in half a bet so that money is his "active bet" so that money is commited to the pot but counts towards his betting. So if nobody raises him, he can call with just another half a bet. The next round of betting starts with the player who is the first to the left of the dealer of course he doesn't have to post another blind, that is just for the very first round. Generally it is a good idea to limit the number of bets per betting round. 4 bets per round is what is quite common although 3 is done sometimes too I think. The structure I described to you is used in texas and Omaha hold'em and could be used in most games. 7 card stud is a bit different, but I'm a bit foggy on it as I have never seen it played in a casino. Everyone puts in a small ante, which should be around 1/8th or so of the first level bet??? something like that. Anyhow, the lowest face up card has a "forced bet" which is something like 1/3 of a real bet. He can either put in his low forced bet or he can put in the whole meal deal if he wants to. Then betting continues clockwise from him. If the low card player puts in the small forced bet then the next guy can raise up to a full bet. For all of the subsequent betting rounds the player who is first to act or "under the gun" is the player with the best hand showing, so a player with two 2's would go before the player with an Ace and a King showing. I hope I didn't butcher the 7 card stud betting structure too badly and if anyone would want to correct me that would be wonderful. I hope this helps and enjoy your pokering.

Thanks fella (and incidentally im in London UK) I will print out and have a good read. We had our first night a couple of weeks back and although the wining hands were correct our betting was wrong. Didnt matter though we played from 8pm to 3am and had a riot. I just want to try and play an easy but officially recognised game so that there will not be any bleeting from a loser when he realises that the rules are not 'common' with poker players. Thanks alot and I hope none of my buddies find this site he he....Oscar

Thank you Chase, but your free and easy use of the terminology already has me shaking in my boots, so I will probably need to get a bit of practise in before our 'friendly game' when you take me to the cleaners.

Cheers buddy and I am going to swot up on how to do the same to my novice friends.....Oscar
