| hey guys, for the past few days i've been playing .25-.50 at UB. i'm pretty much a poker newbie, i've played with friends in home games for the last couple month but have no "real poker" experience. after jsut a few hours of play, i was down something like $15. my confidence was a little shaken and decided to take my chance at a $5 SnG. i had never played one before and actually just learned what one was today! to make a long story short, my entire goal was to just place in a paying spot (top 3 right?) but even that seemed like a long shot when i started. after about 15 minutes, i realized 5 chairs were already empty and started thinking that making some money in this thing might actually happen. well i ended up getting a decent chip lead and winning the whole thing! not bad for a first timer huh? | ||

| You said 5 players busted out in the first 15 minutes and this is pretty typical of SnGs. You see guys all the time open raising all-in when the blinds are 10/20 and all kinds of stupid, overaggresive plays. Don't get caught up in it. Players way, way overplay their hands in these SnGs and you can use their overaggresiveness to your advantage. A good strategy is just playing very tight at the beginning and let others overplay their hands and bust each other out. Of course, play your strong hands strongly, but be more willing to let a marginal hand go, even if you suspect you're being bluffed. Better to preserve chips and survive with the usual crew of all-in maniacs that populate SnGs at these levels. Don't try and be the table captain. Once it gets five handed or the blinds start to become a signifcant portion of your stack--usually around 100/200--then you have to take the gloves off and get very aggressive. Steal as often as possible and put others to the test. Once you get to this stage the blinds are large enough and go up fast enough that things can become a crap shoot. You have to be willing to take coin flip descision at this point. Now you want to be table captain and control the action as much as your stack will allow. This strategy is very effective at the low buyin SnGs and works very well up to $30 and even $50. Though at these higher levels you won't have quite as many players making manical plays and more often you'll have 6-7 still around when the blinds go to 100/200. But not enough to make this strategy unsound at these levels, IMHO. | ||

| that was kind of my strategy. i think i only played 1 or 2 pots before the first 5 were eliminated. i also checked my stats early on and won 6/6 of the pots that i saw the flops on. after there were about 5-4 left, i went in to super-aggressive mode. even though i'm a beginner, it was kind of easy to sense weakness in others' betting and i would capatilize on it. that SnG was so much more fun than playing low limit games. | ||

| Just don't be like me where you win your first one then finish 9th, then 7th, then 6th before finishing 4th. One out of the money. So... be wise. Keep winning. on 24.
