Playing NL like it were Limit, beigs, 23. Jul 2003 08:49

I've been playing some NL SnG's on Party for practice and I've run into quite a conundrum. Many of the players play like it was limit. (I'm pretty sure Paul Stine was complaining about this at the UPF tourney). I'm sure it's just laziness and the players are hitting the 'bet' button or the 'raise' button (unless they raise all in) but I've run into a problem with this.

When I have a hand, I'm playing aggressively pre-flop and I try to continue this aggression post flop if I don't miss completely. The problem is that when I do miss the flop, or I'm forced to get away from my hand, I'm in much worse chip position than the other players. My aggressiveness depletes my stack where other players are slowly whittling away theirs and sticking around as a result. Even the loose players don't get hurt when they lose because they're only losing the minimum.

Any advice?

Beigs

You don't say what your standard pre-flop bet is, but is it possible you're raising too much pre-flop?

If you're dealing with the kind of hand that you absolutely must improve in order continue playing (like say, 9-9 or JTs), you want to see the flop as cheaply as possible--1 or 2 bets max.

If you've got the kind of hand that is almost certainly the best, but may be vulnerable if the flop is bad (KK or QQ, for example), I think you want to raise enough only isolate the hand against 1 or 2 players.--maybe 3-4 times the blinds in early rounds. Then you can easily get away if the flop is troublesome, or make a bigger bet if no overcards come up. Raising more seems too risky to me. Why bet 1/3 or 1/2 of your stack at this point, when you can get the same benefit from betting 1/10th?

With raising hands (depending on position AA to AQ or so) I've generally raised 2.5 to 3 times the BB. I will rarely raise more unless I'm already short stacked and need to make a move. This usually isolates me to 1 or 2 other players and I can get away from my hand easily. The problem is the hands I'm not involved in, everyone else is only losing minumum bets. Meanwhile, the one hand I play and have to get out of, I'm out 3 bets!

I'm not the most experienced, but what about beating them at their own game?

Limp in for cheap, then punish them when you hit something big. Given the implied odds that go along with NL, you can limp in with more hands that you wouldn't normally play knowing that if you hit hard you can get tons more out of it.

Your strength here is being better able to know on the flop if you are ahead or behind, and by how much you are ahead or behind. THAT is where your critical decision is, since they will normally cold call a 3x the blinds raise, making it difficult for you to isolate.

I have learned to not be aggressive with fish until I've been around a while and they have learned not to mess with me. Early in a tourney or even at a ring game, you won't get much respect. People will call "just to see."

My 2 cents,
SKinner

i have been having a very similar problem on UB. sitting back and waiting for premium hands whittles me away since the blinds go up so freaking fast! and once i do get in and get aggressive...i get "called to see" by JXo and other assorted b.s. that ends up making two pair. top pair just ain't what it used to be...... ;)

i realize that i am still in the learning stages of NL. but loose-aggressive NL players are taking me to the house....especially since i can't put them on much of anything after the flop.
