Is this a bad beat or what???!!!, Yancey, 22. Jul 2003 06:42

Ok, I'm playing on a 5/10 Texas Holdem table at UB. During one hour of play I catch (2) KK, (2) QQ, (1) AA ( this is no lie, I have the hand history). I LOST on every single one of these hands. I wondering if this happens regularly on UB or was thier some mysterious forces at work against me? ;)

My very last hand was the AA, when I lost to a flush drawn on the river I just said "Thats a sign from the Gods that I should stop playing poker for the night." ;)

Yup, I'll take what's behind door number 2. Same thing's been known to happen in live play. Ask anyone who's seen enough hands.

Hi Yancy

If it was 50-50 to win any single hand (That might be too high a win ratio with those hands in a loose game) you would only be about 1 in 64 to lose 5 in a row!

I started last month going 0 for 11 with pocket aces in live games. Unfortunately these sort of short term results happen. I'm making a mistake by recalling and dwelling on these kind of runs, it's best to ignore them and focus on whether you played each hand the best you could instead. Your short negative run is by no means unusual.

Hey Yancey,

Yeah, it really stinks when your premium pairs don't hold up and I'm sorry that you had a bad session, but I'd just like to analyze some things here that may make things a little more clearer for you.

Was your starting hand one that hit the flop *hard* for you or were there various draws out there that were getting reallly good odds to continue? Whenever you hold a pocket pair and you get several players who call your raise, *sometimes* the flop actually favors their hand/or draw than it does yours. If there were times when your own pair was really not in the playing zone on the flop, but maybe somebody else flopped an open-ended straight and a four flush, than the beat you took was realy not that much of a bad beat, ...what I'm saying is, it may have been justified,or they could have outflopped you, too. It sucks when they get there, too....but it happens. And yes, *sometimes*, you will have to know when to release your own hand as well, regardless of what it was pre-flop.

And when you only put in a short amount of time at the table, *anything* can happen, great results, and really crappy results, too....no matter how well you may have played. This was just a short term of a bad result. But maybe on your next session, you'll win your fair share and then some.......getting outdrawn is just a part of the game, and without it, nobody would ever bother to call you if they knew they didn't have a chance to win, so when you're getting the *best* of it, and you *know* just when to release a hand or press a hand, your own results may be better as well.

So hang in there.....put it behind you and know that, the only thing that really matters at all is that you just played your best game....made the best decisions throughout the hand......you always kept your focus on the situation at hand.... and you didn't steam over any of those beats that may have provoked you to make any poor choices yourself. That's all you can expect and remember.....poker is many, many sessions throughout your lifetime, and this unfortunately was just one of those days. As soon as you book a winning session, you'll feel much better.....not that it really matters much, because it's the long term result that count, but I know for myself that when I have a losing session, I try to analyze everything to see if maybe I went wrong somewhere during my session and it helps to be honest with yourself so you can correct anything that may be a weakness or leak in your game (maybe it was something that you didn't even notice at the time) because I know how it is when you get caught up in the game that sometimes you're actually losing sight of what's really going on there and your game starts to deteriorate and you can't even see it. Sometimes the tiniest thing can trigger you ("you", meaning anyone) to go off your game, and that's why it is so important to truly make an honest assessment of how you played and fix it if need be.
But like I said, if you played a solid game and made the best choices....well you can't get down on yourself for that, so just be glad that you *have* the abilities to play and get right back out there!

Better results.

damn, that's irriating. I'm sorry to hear you had to suffer it. In all honestly, I have had similar runs both online and at the B&M... it's just something you have to be willing to tolerate if you want to play regularly.

Keep at it though, just around the corner is a good run that will make up for it. But be careful to recognize it, because it won't be quite so spectacular! :)

When you've been playing for a long time you'll see this sort of thing happen all the time. Just variance.

Oh, and as an example how these things happen, the first 7 times that I flopped a set of jacks this year it didn't hold up. It got to a point where I'd look down at JJ and hope to flop an overpair rather than a set.

7? Are you sure you're not exaggerating?

7. I didn't win with a set of jacks in January, February, or March. At first I thought it was a coincidence that I kept flopping sets with my JJ and not hitting. Then it got scary. 7.

The worst example was when Phyllis' daughter beat my flopped set of jacks with a backdoor board 4-flush with her 4c and no pair. In fairness it was her first time playing, but it hurt. a lot. I think that was episode 3 or 4 of the set of jacks not holding up. I didn't win with a set of jacks until about a month ago, but I don't think I hit a set of jacks until then after March...maybe April ... I didn't write it down.
