| I play rugby, and one of the players that plays with me is a poker player. He is a dentist to support his wealthy poker career I believe is how everyone at the club puts it. Anyhow, I asked him about where to find some poker books, and he offered to lend me some. He just lent me these 3 books to start off with. My question is: in what order shall I read them? "Improve your Poker" by Bob Ciaffone, "Hold'em Poker for Adv. Players" by Skl and Mal, "Championship Hold'em" by T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy. Thanks. | ||

| Hey Rugby man, Tough sport. You should read all of those books. If you already understand hold 'em and intend on primarily playing that game, imo I would read Sklansky's book first because it will give you a great overview of hold em strategies, starting hands and odds. TJ and Toms's book is a case study of championship tournament hands. It is great for tourney theory, but it would depend if you plan on playing ring games or tourneys. I haven't read the book by Bob C. I'm not sure if it covers all types of poker games or is specific. In any case, good luck and ask the dentist to stake you LOL | ||

| You might even want to look up "Hold'em Poker" by Sklansky and Malmuth before you read "Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players". Or another good intro book is Lee Jones's "How to win at Low Limit Hold'em". | ||

| I miss my young rugby years. While soccer is a gentleman's sport played by savages, rugby is a savage sport played by gentlemen. Fond memories... | ||

| If you are completely new to holdem, you may want to get Winning Low-Limit Hold'em by Lee Jones and start with that. Holdem Poker For Advanced Players is the bible for Holdem, but you may have trouble grasping some of the concepts in that until you are familiar with the game. Everything I have read by Ciaffone has been quality. Haven't read any of TJ's books, but in the forums I frequent they are generally not as well respected as Sklansky/Malmath or Ciaffone books, and are also quite pricey compared to the others. If you are serious about poker, I would strongly recommend that you read the Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. it explains all the concepts and why you make the plays that are suggested in the other books. | ||
