Online players- take a look at your game, palman, 21. Jul 2003 19:35

In reading wren's rant and my own bad streak as of late(when I lose with AK to Q2o after I raised 6 times the blinds level 1 of a sit n go), a word of caution:

I find myself being overly critical of the other players. I find myself being so amazed and disgusted with other people's play, that I haven't been playing with a clear head.

The advantage the fishes have is they don't go on tilt by realizing how they lost by such awful plays.

I've found myself actually playing worse against them, simply because I know I'm better and I'm sure it'll work out. But then when I'm sitting knocked out of the tournament, I look back at what an awful call I made.

Fishes get hands every now and then, and we should remember that. Don't think your top pair with weak kicker is good just because you've seen them make huge bets with mid pair. Play position more often than usual, because you can no longer predict accurately what there is behind you.

And just remember to tell yourself that their Q2o is why you have a bankroll now.

That's one of the things that kills me. I'll watch some fish call it down to the river with crap so many times and won't respect his or her game, then I go at them with a good hand only to find out this time they have the pocket aces. How frustrating is that? You're right, you still have to consider that they other player could have a real hand.

most of my losing streaks have come from making bad plays against players who I don't respect. Then I reraise them, they reraise and I find out they actually have the nuts. It seems, something, they ONLY have the nuts playing against me (natch).

Here is something useful though that I have found - unless you are playing a total maniac (which there are quite a few) most of the fish will simply call down to the river, but will never re-raise unless they have the nuts.

For the reason, I usually will bet into them on the flop and see if they call or reraise. If they call, and I have top pair and a solid (but not necessarily best) kicker, I will bet into them again on the turn and again on the river (unless a scare comes comes off). I have been paid off in this scenario countless times, and often times they will just fold on the river if they haven't hit their i nside straight or whatever they are drawing to.

If reraised on the flop, I simply fold (same on the river).

Obviously having position helps, but they will bet out often with inferior hands, so I often will re-raise. Again, they usually will never fold until they miss their longshot draw on the river.

But if re-raised, run for the hills (especially against a maniac). Also, I try to stay away from playing hands like middle pairs with overcards. Just too hard to figure out what the heck they are holding (could be anything).

But it becomes easier (IMO) to play hands like A-T against the fishes because they will play any ace so when you flop AA3, they will bet out their A5os. Against good players you would think you had major kicker problems. Only problem is yopu have to worry about the Boat.

The fish generally play any ace, any king (some even play any Queen!) and they will also play any two suited cards, connected or not (I see preflop raising with hands like 8-5suited). Lots of J-7 suited, Q2 suited, anything suited they think is a good hand.

I have reminded myself that occasionally they get good hands and I will not chase them, especially if they are betting.

Some wild swings on Party Poker but generally good results. Also, I have found that sticking to the 6 handed games helps alot. Plenty of action and nice pots but far less opportunity for suck outs.

This is just my two cents. I am not an expert, but have been playing and winning on line low limit holdem for a year now and these are just my observations.
