The power of the all in in NL, Bond18, 21. Jul 2003 16:03

After finishing the NL holdem portion of Super System and reading some posts on this board that say that SS style of NL is outdated, i'd like to open up the board to a discussion of the effectiveness and proper use of the all in. I myself prefer to push all my chips in with AA-JJ pre flop if i think i can get a caller, or on the flop if i've made a hand or a solid draw. Then after establishing a table image of reckless i like to wait to complete a draw on the turn/river and push it in, hoping somebody will take me for bluffing/drawing/etc and call. What do you guys think?

The super system works against non-calling station opponents, but you have to use it correctly. It took me 4 or 5 re-reads to get down the finer points.

It also takes alot of balls to use the system correctly.

Watch out for the all-in preflop with QQ and JJ. Not a preferred move. When going all-in with QQ and JJ, if someone does call your all-in, he's going to have a hand. I think the worst possible hand the caller can have is AK in which your only a slight favorite. And do you really want to risk all your chips only being about a 11 to 10 favorite. If you run into AA or KK, your done! My strategy is a little different. With AA i put in a decent size raise (4-5x the big blind) and no matter what flops, i then go all-in. Same thing with KK except if the A hits the board, usually muck. With QQ and JJ its a better play to raise a little and if no overcards hit, then pop the pot. Dont risk the whole tourney with QQ and JJ, even though they can look really good in your hand. Espicially if the cards are running cold.

Aces, I think pushing all in regardless of flop is just plain nuts. If a high pair comes (flop like KK6), three connected cards (9TJ) or three suited cards come, you could be beat already. Pocket AA will USUALLY produced the best hand after the flop, but not always. Since going all-in puts the whole tourney on the line, it's important be more selective.

I don't like this play early on in a tournament because there is really nothing at stake yet. Sure, it might work 90-95% of the time with everyone folding to you, but so what? You have risked your whole stack to win the blinds instead of risking a smaller amount that likely could have done the same. I agree with Aces that doing this with QQ and JJ is not a smart move...someone could wake up behind you with bigger pairs and then you are out.

In a cash game, all-in moves like this are more appropriate because you can always go back into your pocket for more $$. However, in a tournament, I think chip protection is more important and therefore it isn't worth the (small) chance that someone has a hand better than you OR just makes a stupid play and sucks out.
