Was a fold here correct?, Dr_Monkey, 21. Jul 2003 10:19

Playing at a $25 NL table. Pretty new to the table. Not sure of the quality of players, but noticed the guy that won this hand raises questionable hands.

Hand history is below, my comments included. This hand came after I lost a LARGE pot to a runner runner flush. (Details in another post...have questions about that too.)

Player 10 calls all-In. (What is this? bluff or pocket A A?)
Dr_Monkey folds. (I had 10.20 left, should I have called with such a large pot?)

This is a difficult hand. Either you think that you are good or you think that your opponent has a 2 and you are drawing to 4 outs. I would say that at this point you are pretty much committed to the pot and should go all in. Really though, you shouldn't have been playing your A7 there. When you hit only the 7 your hand is very vulnerable and this is a difficult bet to make.

I think the whole hand is a dangerous one and one that you shouldn't have gotten involved in, but once you did was a call ok? Probably.

I think that says alot. When he raised, my first thought was fold. Which I normally would. I think I was on quasi-tilt. My sit and go game has fallen apart. Have watched too many crazy hands take big pots while I watch. Think I just wanted to get into the action. And when my 7 hit, I thought I could steal.

Thanks for the insight. Going to refocus my game.

I think he had his pocket 7's and you were toast from the beginning.
I usually fold when a pair hits on the flop unless I have a part of it.

He's a lot more likely to have A2 than 77, mathematically speaking, and either could be played that way. Especially if we are talking about a player who doesn't know anything, he could have AT or he could have 99 and play it there. Never assume that something really unlikely has happened when dealing with BBPP's (bad bad poker players).

I made that mistake once when I flopped a broadway with a flush draw and stopped betting after getting a 7-bet to me because I thought, "He must have broadway too, but possibly he has a better backdoor flush draw than me." Needless to say, the guy had *only* a flush draw.
