NLHE tournament books, Don Quixote, 20. Jul 2003 18:22

I played NLHE at Poker Stars during their BETA testing a long time back. I didnt do too well and didnt really care much for it. Maybe I didnt like it because I couldnt play it and didnt even have too much experience at holdem in general.

My ring game experience since those long ago days seems to have helped my tournament game as well. I played a few set and go tournies prior to the UPF tourney and did ok. My 8th place finish against the tough competitors on UPF has encouraged me to get some books and study up on NL tourney strategy. I really enjoyed the UPF tourney and the NL deal in general. .

Will you all be so kind as to recommend some NLHE tournament books and the order in which you would recommend that I purchase and study them.

I learned AK against MRoban's KK was a good bet. It is always nice to make Broadway with AK. :-) Also, I learned it is not such a great idea to go all in with a draw. I made plenty of other mistakes. As soon as I can get ahold of the hand histories, I will look back over them and probably post a few questions.

I played in a 693 field in a NLHE $20 buyin last night at Party. Was doing pretty good til the $50./100 level when I got KK beat by two different players. Yep, you guessed it....I limped first in from UTG +2.
One player in EMP (stack of $190) called, and a LMP player raised $500. I raised all in and they called with A9s and A5 respectively and hit the ace on the river. I finished in the low 300's. Ok, I just had to include one bad beat story. AK's, KK's and TJQK draws are tough, but I hope I came away a little more awareness of when to hold em and when to fold em :-)

Thanks in advance.

"Championship No-Limit & Pot Limit Hold'em" by T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy is considered by many to be the Bible for NLHE Tournament strategy. At most places it's $39.95 but I did find one website that had it at a bit of a discount at $32.97:

I also suggest buying "Tournament Texas Hold'em for Windows" if you don't already have it, while playing computer opponents is much different and somewhat more predictable than playing in a tournament against live players you still won't win or even money much against the computer if you consistently play with poor strategy. By practicing against the computer you can get a much better feel for what it will take to win in real life scenarios.

I second the recommendation for Cloutier & McEvoy's book. I also think you have to get Super System, even though it's kinda pricey, and has a lot of sections on games you probably will never play. The hold'em sections are excellent and really made a lot of things more clear for me.

Believe it or not, there are many times when you should push in a large amount of chips with a draw. If you read your opponent as weak, you think he has 2nd pair or something like that, sometimes you make a semi-bluff move at the pot. For instance, if you think there is a 50% chance your opponent will fold to a large bet, plus a 33% chance of making your draw, then it could be worth it to make a stab at the pot. A lot of judgement is involved on when to try to pull this off and a lot depends on how much is already in the pot, i.e. how much reward will be won in relation to the risk.

Sklansky's tournament book looks pretty good. Wren has read it and I've leafed through it a little. There are a few things he says in there which I wouldn't have thought of that are really rather clever. He has a lot of good ideas about when to bluff at a flop, etc.
