Hey again guys,

Thanks for the help from the last post. I can see that I was wasting a lot of bets trying to protect weak made hands.

Now I have to ask about preflop hand selection. Basically, I'm only playing A2 from early position. I'll play A3 if it has nice high features. From middle position I'll also play hands like 234x, 4 face cards, 2 big pair, etc. Any thoughts on my hand selection. Also, what should I be calling raises with and how player dependent is it. I normally muck just about everything except A2. However, I may reraise a hand like AA34 to get it heads up.

Barry and 4Poker, thanks for patching that big hole in my flop play last time.

Thanks for the help,
KID

Hey Kid,

Basically...I think your starting selection is correct, though I'm not crazy about the two big pair holding...only because that particular holding really limits your possibilities by allowing yourself enough outs/draws to complete it. Not to mention that if you do flop a set?....you may find yourself committing too many of those chips again with no other re-draw to the hand.

Other than that, I feel that (like in all games)...the *closer* you are in early position (EP), the *much stronger* your starting hand needs to be, where you'll have more than just a dry A-2.

The A-3 suited hands with 2 other strong cards, and the 2-3-4x hands are playable, but from the right position and with no raises in front of you. But...if you are familiar with the players in your game, and you're aware as to what cards they tend to come in with...if they are solid players, more than likely you would not want to be looking to play those 2-3-x-x hands because they are probably playing a hand that consists of an Ace thus decreasing your own odds now to flop one to go along with your 2-3 for a nut low.

I like to raise with the really strong high and low premium hands and will do so from about any position. Hands like A-A-2-3 suited, A-A-2-4 suited, A-A-2-K suited, A-2-3-K double suited (Ace and King) ....but the real monster *low* draw holding, A-2-3-4, I would almost never raise with up front because that holding wants alot of volume on its strong nut low draw potential and for the reason that you can even counterfeit the hand one time and still be able to continue with enough ease if the flop comes up low. If you're on or close to the button with that hand, if everyone has just limped in and the action is now to you...I would tend to put in a raise there for value. But keep in mind, you do want volume with the hand, so make sure you have enough callers in first before doing so.

Hope this helps....I'm actually in an O8 game right now, so I've got to go before they pick me up!!

Good luck!

4P-

Indeed. Hands like JJQQ can be real pigs. Something like AAKK isn't bad if you've got 1 or 2 suited aces because then at least you have your nut flush outs. KKQQ is ok too. Also when you hit your set, you want to have an eternal top set and if you tighten up you want a good tight.Still, I'd take JQKK over KKQQ any day.

It's not JUST A-small up front, Easy E, 19. Jul 2003 11:50

you need to consider the REST of your hand as well. A2-junk-junk is NOT a hand to play up front with.

Scooping hands, a primary goal of O/8, is even MORE of a requirement up front Don't just look at the low part of the hands up front- look how the other 2 cards work for outs (high or low)

Indeed. But you can always play hands like A23X where your ace is suited. I should also mention that I have a fondness for A2XX with a suited ace, where X<=8. It's a pretty piggy hand, but the nice thing about it is that you can hit your set and have a nut low. If the flop comes something like 348 and you're sitting on A288 you can start jamming the hell out of it.
