| Read the posts here all the time, and everyone seems quite knowledgeable. I have only been playing for 6 months or so, but I'm beating the $1-$2 I play. It's no big deal, and I certainly have much to learn. But I have studied and am not a clueless fish. That being said, after reading all the recent tourney posts, I wonder how quickly I would have had my butt handed to me had I joined everyone last night. Which brings me to my question?could you guys/gals maybe drop a line here and let me know how long you have been playing poker? I am wondering what the different degrees of experience here are. Know what I mean, Vern? Thanks, SKinner | ||

| Skinner I just started playing poker online last month. Ive always played poker but never online. My strengths are in tournament gamesand my weakness are in ring games. Last night, I got to play against the best players on UPF and placed second. It all comes down to playing a very solid game and not letting anyone run over you. There were times when I was getting bullied because I was the "new amatuer". Everyone playing last night were the same people helping me in my strategy and gameplan. My game has improved over 1000% since I have been playing last month and I hpoe it continues to improve with the help of everyone on this board. Also, I have learned a lot from reading posts, books, and playing on pokerschoolonline.com. I pay a monthly fee of $15 but I get to gamble with play money, and people treat it like real money so it has more of a real play feel to it. Experience is the key to getting better, but I think having the desire to learn will get you to the next level BTW, coming in 2nd has replenished my bankroll! I am now even :) So, I quickly withdrew $100 so I could order some new books on poker. I dont want to risk losing money when I can invest it in some knowledge! Mike www.pokeranon.com | ||

| SKinner, I've only been playing seriously for about three or four months. I've played off and on for awhile but have always been a losing player until I've started really taking it seriously lately. I tend to be a better tourney player than ring, but I'm finally winning regularly on the ring games. Last night I came in sixth, being kicked on the bubble and saw where my inexperience showed through a little. I got caught between Wren and Chasepoker towards the end and was being murdered by the two of them. ChasePoker, to my left, was using his big stack very effectively by raising almost every hand and making TK and I know that any pot we were in was going to cost us a large percentage of our chips. Wren was blind stealing every round, making it difficult to make any moves. The two of them managed to wear me down. Guru | ||

| It was a coin flip, Guru. One of us was going to be blinded out. You just made a stand. I played at B&M for first time last November. Then again in February. In March I started playing online and reading books. Been to B&M a total of 4 times. And can't say I've logged too many hours at UB. But enough. I won some good UB points and have spent the majority of my time playing UB Point Sit and Gos. They are just SOOO fun! So after only 4-5 months I have made little money. Placed in some tournaments. Getting ready to try my luck at Aruba. But mostly HAD A LOT OF FUN!! TKarrde "The next best thing to playing and winning, is playing and losing." | ||

| Skinner- I have been playing seriously for 3 years now. Over that time period, I have tried to spend at least as much time studying te game as playing it. For me, this forum has been great as there are a number of players on here that have helped me tremendously. Keep up the good work and attitude. You can NEVER stop learning this game. Steve | ||

| SKinner- My first poker game was in February, so I've been playing for about 5 months now. My strength is in ring games. I pretty consistently beat low limits (3-6, 4-8, 5-10), and have been trying to focus on NL tournament play as the next step for me. I finished in 7th place last night, and I was happy with my performance overall. Even tho I busted out on what could be considered a "bad-beat" I'm not upset about it for two reasons: 1) that's the nature of the game, and 2) I was seriously short-stacked, and had little chance of doing better than 6th even had I won that hand. Overall, it was an approprate finish for the game I was playing. I play an average of about 20 hours a week (online and B&M combined) and study (read books, articles and this forum) also about 20 hours a week. What I learn here is, by far, the most valuable. -Moz "May your chips never fall from a cow." | ||

| I've been playing poker with a relatively high frequency since the fourth grade, but I didn't get into hold'em seriously until a little over a year ago. | ||

| Hiya Skinner, I've been playing poker casually for about 3 1/2 years, and more seriously for the last two. For the first year or so, my experience was limited to very low, spread limit Dealer's Choice homegames, which meant Follow the Queens, Anaconda, Kings and Little Ones and all those other "gems" :O) In about February, 2001, I had my first experience with online poker. A friend of mine told me about one site, PokerPages which was sending a couple players to the World Series of Poker. I downloaded the software and started playing the no limit freeroll tournaments and play chip limit ring games. Didn't win a trip to the WSOP, but I did gain a significant amount of hold'em experience. I played for the first time at a casino in May, 2001. Sat down at the $3-6 at Casino Ramo and won about $60. That Summer, PokerPages changed their software, and then started tracking player results at the freerolls. I was booking some pretty decent results and was actually in the lead in the player ranking table for a short while. I played a total of about 120 freeroll tournaments there, and I believe I'm still somewhere in the top 5% in the player rankings, but it's funny - didn't manage to win a single tournament. Numerous final table appearances, but no first. Around this time, I started playing freerolls on Pokerstars as well. My first online tournament win came, strangely enough, in a Stud Hi tournament. My second came in a Stud HiLo tournament. I had very little stud experience, so this was quite amusing. I spent a bit of time playing on Ultimate Bet as well. A friend of mine (the same friend who told me about PokerPages, actually) won a seat via UB into the World Heads up Poker Challenge, in Vienna. I think this was in August, 2001. He played for all of about 5 minutes and then risked all of his chips on a bluff, which was picked off by the highly astute Henry Nowakowski. UB started spreading real $ games around this time, and at one point they credited me with $5 just for being a "loyal customer". I messed around on the .25-.5 tables and blew it after a few hours. Some time later, I won another $10 in a tournament, and blew this as well. Then, in March 2002, I won yet another $10 in a freeroll, and this time I persevered and worked it up to an eventual $5000 or so. I played A LOT of poker in 2002. Both online, mostly at UB, and in real life. A bunch of us in the area got together for frequent no limit hold'em games, that would often go on for 10-12 hours at a time. It was around this time I met stdio, at a poker game, of course (I think I mentioned something about the bad beat he put on me that night, but I'm not allowed to give details ;) Anyhoo...I'm amazed that I managed to pass my courses that term as I dedicated next to no time to school. But, I managed to scrape by. Snagged my degree, and then proceeded to bum around for the next several months just playing more poker. Early in January of this year, Stdio finally convinced me to give the $5-10 at Brantford a shot, so I did, and found it surprisingly soft - even more so than the $1-2 and $2-4 online games I'd been playing. We started heading out there 2 or 3 times a week, and I found myself making about 1.5 BB/hr; not too shabby. I briefly entertained the thought of taking a shot at going pro, but I didn't have the roll for it, didn't want to "waste" my degree, didn't want to disappoint my family, etc. etc. etc. So, I put a lot of effort into getting a job and eventually it paid off. So I guess I'm now a "semi-pro", as I'm confident that I'm a winning player, but it's no longer my primary source of income. I love the game, however, and will continue striving to learn more and improve my play. Whew..that ended up quite longwinded, huh? | ||

During that time I have played about 55,000 hours......It has been an interesting journey......Probably a sign of a misspent life :-) Roy Cooke on 18. | Roy, I shudder when I think of what your life may have turned into if you had caught a really bad string of beats upon arriving in Vegas. Doubtless, you've ruminated about it too. As it turns out though, you've made a good life for yourself, are building a good family, and have gained the respect and admiration of a majority of those in your field. If that is a misspent life then sign me up. on 18. Jul 2003 13:03 Roy Cooke wrote: > I have been playing poker since I was 15 which is 31 years ago. | Thanx...I was half-joking! I do often think what my life could have been had I received an education and done something more on a spiritual and productive level in my life. Poker has been good to me in many ways.....That said, It is a self-absorbed life that contributes little to the world. Sometimes I wish I would have done something that produced a more positive result on the world. I plan on fulfilling that goal late rin my life. | >>>That said, It is a self-absorbed life that contributes little to the world.<<< Hey Roy- I have some thoughts on this. Generally, my view of pro athletes, gamblers, and actors is that they contribute nothing of real value to world, except entertainment, through their careers. That said, you should look at your life overall, not just your poker career. Like many other pros, you have used your career to find other ways to contribute in a BIG way: Think of all of the contribution you have made to this forum, helps other people improve in some way. You articles in Card Player do the same. I see ads in Card Player that you are also in Real Estate. That contributes in a big way. Let's not forget your children. They are a WONDERFUL contribution to the world. Don't sell yourself short. -Moz "May your chips never fall from a cow." | ||

| I've been playing poker since I was a little kid with my family at the kitchen table! Although we didn't take it seriously and were most definitely playing really bad....at the time, it was alot of fun and I have always had a great admiration for the game to this day. I've played for several years in the casions before I decided to give it a shot at making it a career. I've been playing close to 11 years now, making it my living, and for the most part.....it's been alot of fun, too. I just learned that when you play poker alot (whether it's your job or not)....you must keep your life balanced with family, friends, other interests, and a positive attitude. No regrets! 4 POKER | ||

| Thanks Roy. I know you feel the same way about not allowing poker to take control over your life and that there is more to life than just that. For many, it overwhelms their entire exsistance (I know you have seen that as well, and so have I)....and that's why I made it a point to never let poker come between me and what really matters the most in life, and that's..... "balance". 4P- | ||
