how can pros play for years and years and not burn out?, jdsalinger, 17. Jul 2003 22:18 | ||

| 7 1/2 months of playing online nearly 8+ hours a day and all is pretty good monetarily. Deposited $800 total and my bankroll got up to $13,600. Last month I didn't make much at all and I've never seen sooo many fish at party. I should have cleared $3k in my opinion but oh well. This month is starting of slow also only up $600 in 2 weeks. Can't remember a losing week in 7 1/2 months but things are really slowing down. Plus playing 3 games at one time is making the bad beats 3 times as much. I've taken so many bad beats 94% fav on the turn only to loose, so many 2 outers heads up it's sickening and two 1000 to 1 perfect runner runner. Mentally I'm so tired I'm ready to put this idea to sleep and maybe play like 8 hours total in a week just to pay off my school loans. I'm just wondering how in the world pros can do this year in year out. It's got to be so mentally draining. I know Brunson in super system recommends like a decent vacation to revive yourself but still it's a much harder life than I thought ( and all I do is wake up late turn on my laptop and play in front of the TV LOL) If anybody is thinking about I can tell you grinding it out for 7+ months over 8 hours a day is no cake. Anybody looking for a C++ programmer :). | ||

| Hi. I have only been a full time pro for 2+ years, though I have been making money as a semi-pro for a lot longer. I play live instead of on-line, and I think that helps. At least there is human interaction to help the monotony of mucking hands. But of course, I also get a lot fewer hands per hour. I play 6 hours per day, five days per week. I find that after six hours (or sometimes less) I am unable to play at anywhere near peak efficiency. I started out playing six day per week, but it was too much. So in part I am saying you have to pace yourself. I do take vacations, but they still revolve around poker. I visit tournaments to play side games in other cities (I live in Las Vegas) and I take poker cruises. I do take time off when I visit my Mom in Florida (only two poker nights on gambling ships in a week) and I took a full ten days in Hawaii with no gambling. It does help. I also play more when big things are doing in Vegas, like the series or Christmas). Lots of pros burn out...in two years, almost the entire cast has changed at the LV tables. Most of the pros who were daily regulars when I started are now irregulars (playing on line, some of them). Long losing streaks will take the desire out of almost everybody. I have played through them, but it has helped me to be on a regular work schedule, so I just go to work and try to ignore recent results. Most folks who make hours and things up as they go have a harder time doing this. Does any of this help? BarryT | ||

| I think the excitement of the pros who play tournaments also helps keep them going. My suggestion to you is a strange one, learn card counting and blackjack. Its a nice change up from poker and can be very profitable, plus its much much MUCH easier than playing poker. | ||

| As Barry said, you definately need some human interaction. I'll be approaching my third anniversary of full time poker soon, and there's no way I would still be playing if it was all Internet. I tried for a month puting all my time in on-line, and found it just got too boring at the end. Yes I beat the games, but couldn't maintain the necessary edge to cover all my expenses. It just seems easier to get distracted playing on the PC. I only use the on-line card rooms for quick occasional plays now, and treat it as entertainment instead of work. I've made full-time live play work for me these past three years without burnout by not trying to put in a set number of hours per week. If I run good for awhile, I tend to take more personal time off. Simply the most important thing is to avoid at all costs the monotony of clocking 50+ hours/week, day in and day out. | ||

| Sounds like you need a break. Also just because you do well in your first few months doesn't mean that you deserve to keep doing as well. Perhaps you are a winning player who is beating the game for 1/4 BB/hour, but you spent your first while running really well? Or maybe you are beating the game for 1.5 BB/hour, but lately you've been running cold? I think that you should probably take a couple of weeks off without playing at all, then get back to it and put in some hours. You'll never be sure where you stand until you have put in a lot of time. And as for burn out, a lot of them do. | ||

| Hi JD It is tough...In poker you HAVE to maintain interest and focus in the game in order to keep playing your best. A poker career spans a lifetime and being consistent and doing your best over time will add much value. In my 20's, I played 60 hours a week, week -in week-out for years on end....I am waaaaaay to old for that stuff now, though I don't play for a living anymore, I tend to start getting mentally tired after 5-6 hours. Poker is a tough life, tough on the mind, tough on the soul and tough on the body. You need to take corrective steps to prolong your career and maintain your health, both mental and physical, and your interest in the game. In order to prevent burnout I would....Exercise, eat right, sleep on a consistent schedule, take care of my mind and body, not play huge hours per year, take breaks and planned vacations, play at different locations, keep an oversized bankroll, take stress reducing measures in life and keep in touch with the outside non-poker world.
