This is my reply to a post on this subject on that other moderated poker discussion site.

How I play my big pairs depends on the texture of the game and where I am in relation to the stronger players.

I don't really want to raise out the weak passive bad hand money on the early rounds. On the other hand I want to make it hard for the tough money to play correctly. If the weakies are already in and I have strong players behind me I will often raise early and/or on 4th to get the the toughies out. If this doesn't have the desired effect at least I get a good idea of their hand strength as well as the hand strength of the others while still maintaining a positive expectancy on this wager.

One of the reasons I bother with this bit of critical thinking is because of the rake.

The effect the rake has on these early rounds, and on small pots in general makes the bets you don't lose more important than the bets you win. I know that sounds strange. But think of it this way. In a game with a 10% rake if you don't lose a bet it is worth $5 to you. However if you win a bet it is only worth $4.00.

If some one makes an open pair and I figure them for 2 pair I figure I need at least an over pair and two live (over) cards and an opponent that will; pay me off if I improve, fold to a semi bluff, or check call with two under pair on the river but will bet out with anything like trips. I need this type of play to help me fade the rake on those early bets.

The rake also can do me a favor by making it incorrect for all but the strongest draws to continue. The tough players know this and will often toss their so - so cards right away. If they continue it often will further define those other hands that they might hold.

The rake makes my EV against these tougher players so small that it often will not fade the rake on the total amount of the action I am forced to put in against them in an effort to get them to fold or that they put in on those draws that don't get there. So I may actually profit from getting them out ASAP.

However the weakies play has enough (-)EV that I can often get the best of it on the total action I put in against them. Also in many cases the weakies will be making major mistakes for major amounts with many types of hands if they do continue beyond the 4th round of betting. So many in fact that it may be worth fading a few of the toughies to give them the privledge of doing so.

In summary: if your going to be up against a real herd you might as well kick at least a few of the smart ones out ASAP.

I know this is kind of confusing but if you read the book especially the part about, keeping the pot small or big pairs in late position where there are already many in, you might get an idea of what I'm trying get at.
