| It sucks. It's an asking-for-second-best hand, unless the game is shorthanded. Then it plays like approx. AJ in a full game. I might throw a call in on the button or SB if the table isn't too tough, but I'm usually getting out unless the flop hits me hard. | ||

| Nothing wrong with playing A9o in late positions especially if it's a weak table without too many players. Of course if the flop misses you then it's junk. I believe where players get into trouble with this hand is getting a lousy flop but then chasing for the 2nd Ace. That can cost you big time. | ||

| Hi. A9o is a Bad Hand. It is one of the very best Bad Hands (just as 72 is one of the worst), but it is a Bad Hand and should generaly be avoided. I do use it in mid-limit games where the blinds are tight to raise first in from the cutoff or the button. I may also try to use A9o to isolate a weak player who limps in before me and I am in one of the last three spots and the remainig players are either bad or tight. In those cases, it plays pretty well, in that it will win showdowns against a passive player (or at most two) who checks all the way to the end (after calling a flop bet) and lets you see whether your A-hi wins. I will three-bet with A9o on the button if a gambling player raisies first in either one or two to my right. These players try to by the button very aggressively, and I am not going to lay down every hand for them. And I will never call, so I will try to gain the initiative and raise if can. (I may slow play an ace on the flop, though, and let the aggressive players bluff some chips off). I try to avoid playing A9o int he blinds, so I will muck i there is a raise and any other palyer in. It is a hand that really needs position, initiative and good play to be effective at all. It is never wrong to muck it in any position. BarryT | ||

| While this hand sux in a full ring, it is a good hand to steal blinds with when it's been folded to you on the button. It's also OK short handed. Heads-up you should be playing any A aggressively. You also might play it for a 1/2 bet in the small blind when there are a lot of limpers in an unraised pot hoping to flop something strong. For example, if you flop two pair, you have someone with AK trapped for a lot of bets. However, you MUST keep in mind in a full ring that if all you flop is an A, that a nine is a VERY marginal kicker and that if you get much action you should likely fold. | ||
