| We are close to an agreement with a Florida casino to hold the Super Poker Challenge. I have few ??? 1) Do tournament players play in more than type poker session, ie: 7 Card Stud, Texas Hold-Em, etc. at one given tournament? 2) Do most players hang around and play the house tables once they are eliminated from the tournament? 3) Would players like to come in the night before for a "get together" and pre-tourney Party? 4) Is Texas Hold-Em the preferred card game? What do you suggest? 5) Which would the average player prefer - a $500 or $1,000 Buy-In? By the way - we have decided on a 85% payout to the top 25% of players with only a $50 entry fee. Players will be able to rebuy into the tournament once anytime before their present chips are extinguished or by the end of the 1st day of play, whichever comes first. The casino will also "add" to the pot - just not sure how much yet. Thanks for the input. We are looking forward to providing an exciting Poker Tournament in the south. Tom | ||

A: It depends on how many hours they have already committed themselves to in the tournament. Most players do not hang around once they're eliminated unless they get knocked out real quick because they will usually be too frustrated and/or mentally exhausted to even bother to play in the ring games. > > 3) Would players like to come in the night before for a "get together" and > pre-tourney Party? A: Not sure about that one, but they held something like that at the Orleans a few years ago, but it was a banquet type luncheon on the day of, and it was pretty nice. I think it's a nice gesture. > > 4) Is Texas Hold-Em the preferred card game? What do you suggest? > A: Although hold-em is very popular, you must spread all the games for a tournament. There are many players who prefer seven card stud and on the east coast, especially in AC and Foxwoods, seven stud is just as popular as hold-em. But you will need to offer Omaha and stud 8 as well because in Mississippi and many parts of California, the game is quite popular. But the final event should be N/L hold-em if you want to proceed with tradition. > 5) Which would the average player prefer - a $500 or $1,000 Buy-In? > A: This is how the major US tournaments are ran.....a tournament runs about 2 1/2 weeks with the first few days having smaller buy-ins ($200-300) and as the tourney continues throughout its coarse, the buy-ins get higher ($500-1500) until you reach the final event where the buy in is quite high. (usually in the bigger events, the buy-in would be around $5,000 on average), but you need to keep the remaining part of the tournament at a buy-in fee that is affordable and reasonable to the majority otherewise your turnout will consist of mostly pro tournament players and you would thus for be excluding too many of those who are the real market in which you're after for. Make it affordable for the average Joe. (the majority). 4 POKER ***************************************************************************** > By the way - we have decided on a 85% payout to the top 25% of players with > only a $50 entry fee. | Thanks 4 Poker! We are being a little different with our set-up. It will only be a week-end tournament, so we can attract locals as well as everyday players that could get a way for a few days. We will limit the tourney to two categories I believe since it is only a weekend tourney. Hold-Em and 7 Card Stud seem to be the favorites on most forums. So, we will probably go with just these two. A $500 buy-in would attract more "everyday" players and the Grand Prize would be $50,000 to the overall winner if we attract 500 players. At $1,000 buy-in, we may eliminate the "everyday" player, but would maybe attract more "pro" players. The Grand Prize at this level would be $125,000 to the overall winner. So, we are still debating. Our thinking is to give the "everyday" player a Tournament to enjoy. What is your opinion on blinds and ante's? Tom | ||

| 25% to 1st place is pretty low for a $500 buy-in. It should be more like 33-40% and scale down from there. | ||

| We want the "average" player to have fun and win a few bucks. Of the prize pool, we forsee the over all winner winning approx 25%, the rest of the top 5 sharing 25%, 11th thru 25 sharing 25% and 26th thru 50th sharing 25% - all graduated depending on placement. I know it's a little different than norm, but we are trying to be different and market to a different crowd. Would it not be worthwhile to spend $500 to win $50,000? Or, $500 to win $2,500 and advance to the next level? I appreciate your comments tho - thanks! Tom | ||

| If you want to have an expanded payout schedule this is fine, but you should keep it within reasonable limits. Generally speaking, anybody who finishes in the money should win at least twice his buyin back. The top player should get AT LEAST 1/3 of the prize pool. Second place should get at least half of the payout that first place got. The bulk of the prize pool should go to your top 10 finishers (the final table). Obeying these guidelines will prevent grumbling. In this sort of thing it is a good idea to go with standards that have been proven to work. The argument of "50,000 should be enough for anybody" doesn't hold any water either. People want to know that they have a shot at money that is commensurate with what they are buying in for. Don't play social engineer and tell people what they should want. Follow what others are doing in the same arena and success is sure to follow you. | ||

| > What is your opinion on blinds and ante's? The industry standard for blinds and antes is the Tex's (texas) TEARS system. Follow it and players will have no complaints about the blinds structure. Deviate from it at your peril. | ||

| > 1) Do tournament players play in more than type poker session, ie: 7 Card > Stud, Texas Hold-Em, etc. at one given tournament? The short answer is NO. The long answer is, "it depends" ... you can have a HORSE tournament for instance which is a rotation of hold'em, omaha, razz, stud, and stud8. These tournaments however cater to a smaller group of players and are not likely to attract many people. I would suggest that if you want to get people in to play you limit yourself to No Limit Texas Hold'em only. > 2) Do most players hang around and play the house tables once they are > eliminated from the tournament? Sure. I don't know about 'most' but there is a good chance that 'many' will. How many is many? Depends how good the action is at the other tables. Don't expect them to go off and play roulette or pai gow though. > 3) Would players like to come in the night before for a "get together" and > pre-tourney Party? Doubtfull. You would do much better to have satelite tournaments in that time. A satelite is a small buy in tourney that awards prizes of entries into the next day's event. By having satelites you can attract more players to your tournament who would otherwise be unable to afford the buyin. > 4) Is Texas Hold-Em the preferred card game? What do you suggest? Yes. By far the preferred game for a tournament is no limit texas hold'em. > 5) Which would the average player prefer - a $500 or $1,000 Buy-In? That depends on the type of players you are planning to attract. You will certainly find more players willing to play in a $500 tourney than in a $1000 tourney. > By the way - we have decided on a 85% payout to the top 25% of players with > only a $50 entry fee. There shouldn't be a need for the casino to add to the prize pool, but if they do then it is a good thing as it defrays some of the very heavy rake you are taking. > Thanks for the input. | The TEARS system was very informative. We will review it completely this week, however it seemd we will adopt this system. It has proven to work and we want to have a great tournament, it certainly will help. I emailed those at TEARS and hope to hear from them soon. Tom | ||
