CHECKING HANDS, TO WIN BONUS, ADAM CADLE, 17. Jul 2003 08:20 | ||

| RECENTLY, IN A POT LIMIT GAME IN ALASKA, I CHECKED A NUT STRAIGHT, THAT COULD BECOME A ROYAL. THIS CLUB PAYS A THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE ROYAL, AND THE POT WAS ONLY $45. IF I BET AND NO ONE CALLED, I WOULD LOSE MY CHANCE AT THE THOUSAND. THERE WAS A COMPETING FLUSH DRAW, AND OF COURSE POSSIBLE FULLS. MY FRIENDS THINK I PLAYED BADLY, BY CHECKING, BUT THE POT WAS SMALL, AND JUST BECAUSE I CHECKED, DOESN'T MEAN THAT A KILLER CARD HAD TO COME. WHAT DO YOU THINK. | ||

| I think risking $45 to win $1000 is a good trade. Sure, you might get beaten by the full, but the huge bonus overlay more then compensates for that if you asked me. One other thing (and not to sound like a pain here)...if you post with ALL CAPS, people get agitated because they view it as YELLING. So, you might want to hit that Caps Lock key to save yourself from any invective. Steve | ||

| Absolutely you check there. You do not want to risk not making the hand. You are winning the $45 anyway, so it is a question of the risk that you fold your opponents vs. the extra bets you will get if you do not. Go for the money here. 1 card is worth $1000 and there are 46 cards left in the deck. Thus you have $21.74 of equity in not folding your opponents just for the jackpot attempt. So unless you expect to make an additional $22 by betting the hand then the smart thing to do there is check and call. You can always bet the river if you don't make your hand too. | ||

| A little of the subject, but I was playing $1-5 stud at the Horseshoe in Tunica. There, they have a bad beat jackpot, but the pot has to be $50 to qualify. I get into a three-way pot with two pair or something and start to realize that the guys I'm against are doing better than me, so I fold on fifth street. The end result was four of a kind beaten by a straight flush. The pot was only $47. The guy was so mad that I didn't call one more bet. He wasn't mad at me, but he was frustrated by the situation. The jackpot was over $5,000. I felt so bad for the guy. | ||

| I think you check here. You have a realistic chance (something like 1 in 46) of drawing the Royal, I wouldn't blow that for what sounds like very little chance that you will get called for an extra big bet. look at it this way, either way you win the pot, and either way you're not getting any more chips out of the other players, right? So if that's all equal, why not choose the way that gives you a chance at the extra money? And if one of the other draws (flush or boat) comes out, then you saved yourself a bet. -Moz "The reports of my assimilation are greatly exaggerated." | ||
