| I signed on to Ultimate Bet this morning for my usual half hour of poker before I head to work. And as the immortal Corey Haim said, "I'm so dead they're going to have to bury me twice." I played with a maniac today. I stayed with it to practicing 'maniac' strategy. Unfortunately, I don't think there is one. Every hand was raised pre-flop and he called everyone down to the end. I think he folded 3 or 4 hands total in the 30 minutes I played. I only played solid cards, and lost every hand. And I mean, EVERY hand. All to the maniac who drew every single card. I pray this is a fluke and not the poker gods trying to tell me something. Anyway... had to vent. | ||

| beigs- Hang in there pal. If you read one of my posts yesterday, I played in a similar situation on Party on Tuesday night and cleaned house. The maniac will throw that $$ back into play, so don't worry. The only suggestion that I have is that I have found it to be destructive to my psyche to play in a loose aggressive game unless I have time to commit. If I were you and only playing 1/2 hour, I would look for a tighter game where you are less likely to have horrendous beats thrown at you in such a short time. Sure, you might win less in that 1/2 hour than if your good hands held up against the maniac, but you would feel better about your game overall, and I think that is extremely important. Steve | ||

| There's NO crying in poker! But try not to feel bad, beigs. It's tough to play heads up with someone, especially a maniac type because you will have to enter so many more pots when playing heads up and when you play against a player like that......it becomes an even tougher game now because it's just so hard to put him on a hand. I bet he stole so many pots from you, too because of your solid play.....but you have to loosen up a bit in this situation and I would imagine that you were just not willing to compromize your own solid game to lower your standards to meet his. So what I would suggest is that you do not put yourself in that situation until you feel really comfortable with that type of play. Personally....I don't like heads up play at all because my starting hand requirements are too "by the book" and I need at least 5 others in the game with me to get the most from it. And, no beigs....the poker Gods are not after you....there are no poker Gods (LOL).......this crazy guy just got his way and would most definitely not be favored against you if you were all playing in a fuller ring game. And hey........you are favored to win the tournament anyway! (you have a "title" to live up to now)!!! Isn't it tonight? Good luck, and NO tears!!!! 4 POKER | ||

| Okay... I'm not very well versed in all the subtelties of handicapping so I'm going to ask this question hoping it makes sense. If I'm 6:1 to win the thing, am I expected to finished at a certain place? Like, 6th out of 36 people (my math may be wrong.) Or is it only saying that I'll win 1 out of ever 7 tournaments? I guess a simpler way to put it would be, where do I have to place to draw even odds? on 17. | I think your estimations are just a little over the top. By my calculations, if I were to bet $1,000,000 equally among all competitors (weighted) and then paid you a $100,000 vig, I would still profit by approximately $1,320,000 on average. If you were to divide all of those numbers by 2.5 you might be able to book this event :) | ||

| Hey beigs- Don't sweat it. It's really tough to play a maniac like that, and sometimes the situation is aggravated when he gets lucky. Another time, though, you will be taking all of his chips. I had this happen last night at a 3-6 table. I sat down and there were THREE maniacs trading chips back and forth. They were pumping the pot so much that they were giving me tremendous odds on all kinds of draws with turn and river bets, and I was catchign cards like crazy. TK showed up just as I was taking the biggest pot on a gut-shot straight that was laying me something like 18:1... it was funny because these were really pissed and throwing obsceneties at me through the chat window, when all of a sudden I see: TKarrde(obs): GO MOZ. I love ya man! or something like it; and after TK left, non of those guys even said another word to me! :) I got up and left with three times my buy-in. It doesn't always go like that tho... often I have the same experiences as you, so I play very tight, keep my losses to a minimum and look forward to the maniac who will pay for it all in the future. -Moz "The reports of my assimilation are greatly exaggerated." | ||

| That was a cool game to watch. I can't believe how many callers there were for that limit. Six and Seven callers a couple times. It was $3/$6 wasn't it? And the pots were often almost the size of the average stacks in front of people. Unbelievable. TKarrde "The next best thing to playing and winning, is playing and losing." | ||

| I know how that is. There are few things more frustrating than when you sit down with 5 good players and 4 imbeciles and the dead money takes all the chips at the table. Part of playing with a maniac is big swings. When he hits a hand he will get paid off really well and make a lot of money. If the maniac is running hot, he will take a lot of money off the table. All you have to do is persevere and you'll get paid in the long run. | ||

| HI Beigs Hang loose...........and get used to it.......you got a lot more crying ahead you. Maniacs win for short periods of time ALL the time....When the go good then tend to dominate.....however, when they go bad.....they can go through huge sums of money real quick. You need to stay menatlly tough through the down swings and don't let it affect you. That way you still have a bankroll on the table when they go bad. Roy Cooke on 17.
