Witnessed this hand last night!!!, Machinegun68, 15. Jul 2003 21:09

Just wanted to share a hand that I saw (wasn't in) last night while playing $1/$2 Hold 'em with some buddies (4 handed). I was in the SB. Player to my left in BB is semi-loose. Player in cut-off to the right of him is an absolute maniac. Dealer is somewhat tight, I am very tight. I am dealt rags and immediately fold. BB raises his blind. CO raises him, is re-raised. Dealer, who called the initial 2 bets, folds at cold-calling 4. Flop comes: 8c 3h 10d. Maniac (CO) absolutely lights up. BB bets. CO raises. etc. up to 4 bets. Turn comes: Jd. I put the BB on Tens, Jacks, or both, or maybe a flush draw. CO could have anything down to a pair of 3's with decent kicker. Betting is maxed out again. River: Ad. Cut-Off Maniac does not seem concerned. BB immediately bets. Maniac raises him, going all in in the process. What do you put Semi-Loose in the BB on now? Two pairs, AT's? What does maniac have now? Did he hit his flush? He could have absolutely anything the way he plays. HUGE Pot with Maniac all-in and BB shortstacked.

-----------------

Answer: 1) BB had a M-Fing Royal Flush! He had KQd of course. This is the first time I have ever seen one in HE, or any kind of poker. How likely is it to happen, will I ever see it again?
2) Maniac had 8's and 3's and called the Royal Flush all the way to the river, even after the ace came! He raised and re-raised on 83o pre-flop! you can see why he just lit up when his miracle flop came. He didn't even have a clue- thought his hand was good all the way - and most of the time it would have been! BB raising and re-raising on JK suited pre-flop I guess was justified against a maniac, I just wouldn't have done it. I definitely wouldn't have done the same after seeing that seemingly rags rainbow flop. I guess I would have missed the Royal :) BB was basically playing overcards against 1 or possibly 2 pair at that point with a boat draw coming. He caught it though. Wasn't that an insane hand? who played worse? Does anything ever justify these kind of calls, even a shot at a Royal? I guess I'm just lucky a) I didn't play this hand and b) there are these kind of loose gooses around to play with that have plenty of $$! hee-hee!

That is a good story. But, these types of players (maniacs) exist at every level. I was playing 15/30 at Party last night and there was a player who raised so many hands pre-flop that it was ridiculous. We might as well have been playing 30/60. And he raised with complete garbage hands: 83o, 95s and the like. I stayed out of his way until I had big big hands and ended up winning close to $800 in 2 hours.

When I sat down, this player had about $450 in front of him. He proceeded to lose and go all-in a few times. He then proceeded to build a stack to close to $1600 in 30 minutes. Then, he went down again to about $500 before leaving the table. I mean, completely unreal...a $2100 swing in 1.5 hrs.

The point is, these players are your lifeblood long-term. Yes, they will have amazing and fantastic runs of cards at times. But, ALL of their winnings and then some will eventually be thrown back into the sea for the better players to swallow. Look for players/games like this and go hunting!

Really? What is your moniker on Party? Like you and I have said before, I rarely play higher than 5/10 online now, but I just couldn't resist this game. The maniac was so fishy it was unreal.

Hey Steve,

I know when I say this I'm going to come across as being completely anal but, I don't tell anyone what my name is on the poker sites. I guess that comes from the fact that I hate it when somebody tries to sit down next to me and watch me play in the "live" card rooms. Don't take ANY offense at all, It's just me!

That is one of the reasons why I don't like tournaments.....if I ever played in a "big one" and happened to make it to the final table, I think I would go nuts with all those people standing around watching! You would think that because I do play for a living that something like that would have no bearing on it at all.....but I don't like being in the spotlight. I played in some smaller tournaments when I was a bit younger and happened to have made 3 final tables but to be honest with you, I didn't feel comfortable with it.

Now put me in a regular ring game and you would never know that I had ANY of those feelings...I'm totally at ease 100% of the time.

Anyway, I hope we don't meet up too often at the tables........I'm sure your own game is pretty damn good! And with respect to you, I won't ask you what your moniker is either. (I'm sure you wouldn't mind but, that's ok).

I hope you understand.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave-

Funny you mention it. I regretted asking the minute I hit "Send Message". I am the same way and frankly want to keep it that way for profiability purposes. As we post on a forum like this, I don't want anyone knowing who I am in an internet game so that they can adjust their play based on what they know about me. It might sound harsh but, let them pay the price.

So, long story short, I am sorry for asking. I got caught up in thinking about the game I sat in last night and man that maniac was absolutely crazy. i have NEVER seen anyone like him at a 15/30 table. Paradise games are much more difficult. I think that I will need to continue trolling the 15/30 games at Party at least until all the pro's (like yourself) come and make the game tougher. I agree with you...I actually see the same players at 15/30 that I do at 5/10.

Anyway, good luck to you and I hope that if we do meet at the tables (unbeknownst, of course), I hav AA and you have KK!! (j/k)

Steve

Anyway,

Hey "Gun",

I was in a game last night at party and the BB held the A-10 of diamonds, there was a raise pre-flop, he called and the flop came up Q-Q-J with 2 diamonds and the turn brought the K of diamonds giving him the royal flush. And to answer your question about the frequency of this hand........it happens way more on-line than in the casinos...I don't know why, but it does. I had my quad queens snapped off by a royal flush on the river in an Omaha game, but that has happened in that game alot more times than in hold-em so I wasn't that shocked at all!
