Not too many tonight- didn't take notes, just watched since the format was generally the same as day one.

Some of the bios were interesting, and the hopping to key hands for the "celebrity" well-know players such as Jesus were okay. The format doesn't give you a lot of poker to view, especially when the shows are only an hour long. I hope the final table is a two hour show.

I should have guessed that a Johnny Chan/"Rounders" piece was coming... even though I love the movie, seemed a bit tedious.

The show seemed to drag a little tonight- was it just me?

It was sorta fun watching Phil H and Sam Grizzle jaw at one another. I unfortunately have to admit that justice was served (i can't believe I am saying this) by Phil busting Sam out.... though I can't believe that Phil DIDN'T put Sam all in with the Ace-high flush near the end.

A couple of hands that Tony D played really surprised me. The AA against Phil's K9, when Phil bet the 9 on the turn- why didn't Tony hit Phil for more chips and/or on the river? I didn't understand that one, even with the board that was out there.

The second one shocked me- he let Phil move him off of trip Jacks? Sorry, I would have had to lose all of my chips there, if I were beaten, because they would have gone over the top of Phil's raise.

I missed the comment, but I assume that the break was coming up when all of the players disappeared and Tony D busted Sam down to a few chip... with Phil playing vulture.

It REALLY is disorienting to suddenly see Sam G with so few chips... and no hand count to give us a WHIFF of a clue.

See everyone next week for day #3.

I agree that not that much poker was shown, but I was completely satisfied with the jawing of Phil and Sam. It was probably the best pure entertainment I've seen in a long time.

From their first two shows, it appears ESPN is trying to entertain rather than show tons of poker. I think that the Travel channel should pick up on the early part of tourneys. They could make each week a 2 day show. DJpoker

Yeah, i thought Tony's laydown of trip Jacks was a huge error. If you don't want to risk everything then re-raise a smaller amount to see what Phil does. I guarantee you he mucks.

It must have been a case of playing a similar hand against him in a prior event where Tony was too aggressive and Phil cut him down. So, Tony didn't want to make the same mistake with a medium kicker. Again, I am with you and I would have put more of a test on him there.

I thought the meditation piece on Phil was hilarious...made him look like an ass. And of course, for the first 15 minutes, he whined about the KJ hand with Tony and then was a bastard throwing cards at him and high fiving the crowd when he won the other pot. I can't stand the guy.

Here's an interesting question. What do you guys think is most responsible for the growing popularity of poker these days?
Is is the Travel Channel?
is it just poker's time?
Personally, I think Rounders put a whole lot of people onto the game, and it has just built up from there.

Anyway, I have been enjoying watching the coverage on ESPN. I now know what you guys mean about Hellmuth. What a clown.

Your question about what's behind the growing popularity of poker can be anwered with one word: Television. Party Poker is the first site to advertise on the WPT telecasts. It also has 3 times the # of players as any other site.
NOt a coincidence--yes rounders played a role, especially in the under 30 set, with 20/something new players able to quote verbatim the dialogue. How the poker industry exploits this groundswell will determine
how far it goes. The potential is unlimited, since its etimated that 50 milion Americans play poker and the international poker scene is booming just as the U.S. is. Poker's time is here, for how long and to what extent is in the hands of poker's marketers.

My thoughts- Rounders maybe a bit, but box office-wise it wasn't a big hit. The internet is huge- with the wealth of information/advice readily available, not only does everyone think they can win but everyone can play- with online sites, there's no longer a need to be near a cardroom or live game. Combine that groundswell with the Discovery, ESPN and Travel Channel shows, and boom, you catch lightning in a bottle.

I won't advise Phil on Poker, but I will say this:

"KEEP YOUR SHIRT ON!"

Yikes--not attractive!

Here's a poker formula:

Doughy suburban white guy + meditation - shirt = complete jackass
