Need help with some NL strategy!, TKarrde, 15. Jul 2003 10:49

No, not for Thursday when I'm walking ya'all to school!

I won an entry into an Aruba Super Satellite tourney at UB. I think they have them once a week or so. I put up 100 points and got 2nd out of 125.

Now my question is this. The supers only give out one prize for every 60 players. The prize is the $4100 entry to the tourney in Aruba with airfare and accomodations.

Should I try and find a tournament that has as few as entrants as possible. Maybe get in one with only 40 players to better my odds. Or should I try and get in a tournament with more players so that even if I only get 2nd or 3rd I can still win an Aruba package?

My reason for asking is that I don't like playing heads up. I can't say it is a strong weakness because I have done quite well at the Sit and Gos in heads up play. But I don't like it.

Still debating more paid out positions or few opponents.

Thanks,

TK

First off, all of the UB aruba events get a lot of players, so you're unlikely to find one that only pays one spot. As for which to play in, I would avoid playing in a rebuy tourney, since you only have the one entry and probably don't want to start flinging in $100 for each rebuy.

The most important thing in playing a satelite that pays multiple equal prizes is respecting bubble time. When there are 5 spots to pay out and 10 players left, coming in 5th is exactly the same as coming in 1st and thus the game becomes a war of attrition. You really want to play very very very tight if you are in the top 5 and likewise if you are a small stack you want to be very agressive and steal a lot - not from other desperate small stacks, but from medium stacks who are afraid to play and drop out of the top 5.

Whilst UB is pretty full of idiots, the best players there are fighting for aruba, so don't expect it to be a cake walk either. It is going to be a difficult tourney, so make sure you respect your opponents. And good luck.

Stdioh - I haven't done much research on these tourneys yet.

Do you know how many they have a week?

You mentioned "rebuy". I thought they were all the same format. Is that incorrect?

Do you know about how many people are in these things? I played in a tourney before that had 400 entrants. It paid out 1 Aruba trip. Then 2-10 got 80k UB points plus a re-entry. And 11-20 got 8k UB points. I made it to 16th in this tourney. But I think it was a special event.

Thanks,

TKarrde

TKardde:

I believe they have them once a week for sure. I played in the 100pt tourney two weeks ago and made it to 64 out of 400 before my ill-fated all-in move (I had a very short stack).

Anyway, I think every Thursday they have an Aruba tournament, but I could be wrong. I have played 2 Aruba $11 sit and go's and have come in 3 and 4th. Arrgghh. Perhaps I should play the $22 to give myself better odds.

As Stdioh has said, I have found the level of play at the Aruba sits to be a bit better than the regular NL sit and gos.

I felt that I was holding my own in the 100pt Satellite too. So congrats on finishing second, that is incredible.

I just deposited money at UB using the Cardplayer.com link, giving me three free intrees into the 11+1 Aruba satalites.

Let me know what you find out. I am going to take a run at it myself here too.
