NL To. bad play or bad luck, Tim C, 15. Jul 2003 07:50

Playin in a NL To. at pokerstars last night, 240 players 60 left, blinds at 300 600. I have 11k T chips and one off the cutoff pick up AdKh. Player 2 off the cutoff with 12k T chips raises 2k. I'm thinking I can't fold and if he doesn't have a great hand and an A or K hit the flop I will not get paid off. I raise 5k he goes all in, and with half my stack in I'm pot comitted. He has QhQs so my AdKh is a slight dog. Flop is 7s As 3s turn 5c and river of course 4s so i'm busted. My question is should I have went all in preflop? called the 2k and saw the flop and probably go all in then, or give up poker forever. Any advice or name calling welcome.

Depending what the range of hands you put him on where, you were anywhere from a 3:1 favorite (against AQ or KQ) for a slight dog (QQ or JJ).

Unless the opener was very loose - agg, i would probably fold and wait for a better situation. You are calling for all your chips in a situation where you are probably not a favorite, or slight favorite at best.

I hate playing in a fishy game, folding there, and then finding out that the bettor was on a weaker queen or even a pig like 78. The only problem is that you still can't play that hand. It is far too likely that somebody is better than you are. You really need to fold it, pick your spot, make your money, and deal with it. I find that it is very dangerous for me to play in very fishy games because if I do catch a bunch of cold cards I get tempted to play in situations like this - I always end up regretting it. Now if the flop checks around and you have that hand and then a brick hits the turn, you might think about betting it to test the waters, but that doesn't mean that you can call a bet with it on the flop.

You were pretty far in the tournament, with a decent sized stack. So at that point, I wouldnt want to be going all in with any hand except AA or KK because I like my chances of making it to the final table and winning. I dont want to do any coin flips.
I would have mucked the AKo in this paticular situation. Why? Lets examine your other two options:
(Call) - I dont like this at all, basically because you give up too much information about your hand. (Well, it would signal to me you had one of four hands: AK maybe AQ or a pair you couldnt bring yourself to fold specifically JJ or TT.) So your call would tell him hes a big favorite. If the flop doesnt bring an ace or king your opponent will probably set himself all in and you'll have an extremely tough decision about calling. (Basically you have to decide if he has AQ or AK?) And if the flop has an ace or king in it he will probably check and be able to get away from his hand, having only invested 2k.
(Raise) - The only way you can raise here is if you push all in. Making a small raise like you did still commits all of your chips, becasue you have 50% in already. And worse, it tells your opponent that your committed to your hand also. However, an all in raise on your part puts the decision on your opponent because he has to be scared of AA or KK.
Survive and thrive. Dont pull another Kathy Liebert. GL. Asher.
