Fairly new to poker, need advice, Brian462, 15. Jul 2003 01:07

Hi,

I've just recently started playing online poker and was hoping I could get a little help with a few questions.

I've read a few books and lots of websites with poker strategies and they all make a lot of sense. The problem I have is that a lot of it doesn't seem to apply to some of the low limit online games. Obviously the mathematical part of the game applies but none of the material I've read deals with games full of "call stations". I can't seem to consistently win when there are 4-5 people at each showdown. To counter this I tried to tighten up the hands I play but I seem to still lose slightly over time.

What sort of mistakes should I be looking for in my game? I can log my stats but there really isn't a lot that I can compare them too. Obviously I'll keep reading books and websites but I would really like to get some more specific feedback.

So, any suggestions that anyone could make would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Having read the article on Morton's Theorum, which I whole heartedly thank Allyc for, I don't see how it will help poor Brian462. Even if he selectively raises hand to try and thin out the multiway pots, there is one problem. He's in showdown with 4-5 people everytime. Trying to thin out the pot when the calling stations are always pryaing for a spike on the river is just throwing your money away. As one of the later thread mentions, I suggest moving up to limits like 3-6, 5-10, where the Morton's Theorum works wonders.

You could try playing in some single table $5 or $10 limit tournaments. Don't get involved in multiway pots, except in the opening rounds when it's still cheap.
Sit tight and raise or reraise with hands like high pairs AK and AQ.
As the number of players decrease, you can start to play a less tight game, but keep it aggressive.Raise, really,to try and steal the blinds.
If you can stay out of large pots, even if it means folding hands like A Q os at times, you should survive to the latter stages of the tournament and have a pretty good chance of getting placed.

Hi Brian

In games with many calling stations, you should cut down dramatically of your bluffs and semi-bluffs....but still play your normal hands (assuming there is not a lot of pre-flop raising). Just play solid cards straight-forwardly....they will call you down....you will get the money over time.....

Thanks for the advice, I loved those articles. I think I will try out a tournament as you said, Allyc. Until then I'll just grind it out and get better where I can.

BTW this site is by far the best resource I've come across on the net. I'll defintely hang around here more often. Thanks

Brian
