| Situation: NL HE Tournament at Foxwoods capped at 200 entries, with rebuys for the first 4 rounds. Top 18 pay, first place 4950, ----10-18th pay 350. It is down to the final 2 tables 10 players each and the tournament is being played hand for hand. Blinds were approximately 3000-6000 no ante, I have around 14,000. This has me in 15th -17th place, I am in late position. A player from mid position go’s all in for around 15k after everyone folded before him, I have no idea what type of player he is as I am new to this table, I have played at this table for around 10-15 minutes. However one of the things I noticed is that this table ALWAYS has at least one person with a big raise or an all in preflop. So the blinds have basically been being passed around to each player including me. I look at my cards and I have pocket Jacks, if I lose the hand I am out of the money, if I win the hand I move up to around 11th. What would you have done? | ||

| Hard to say without a good read on your opponent. I actually folded pocket Q's in a similar situation, only to have the three people with lower stacks than me all win a hand and I ended up being the one who blinded out 10th (with the top 9 spots paying out). So my point is you're not a given to win either way you do it, and without a really good read on your opponent it's hard to say. Many people with shorter stacks will go all-in with any Ace. I would figure he either has a pocket pair or an Ace with a face card, so you could be well ahead, well behind, or a coin flip away.... So what happened? | ||

| This is a doozie. I've already written up both answers. I myself busted out this weekend with 10-10 in a similar blind-desparate situation, but with more players than this still around. Did you check the other table, and where the shortstacks were with respect to the blinds? That's the anal, but right thing to do. What is your investment in the tourney, and does it matter, or are you playing for the pride of finishing in the money? I guess I go all-in here against his seemingly 2 cards above 10. He might even be playing a Jack, which cuts his odds down a lot lower than he thought he had. It's a strange all-in raise with power cards (why not call and re-raise when someone else does), but I suppose that's his play. Sounds like you have 6 or 7 hands left before the blinds hit you again. I go ahead and go all-in because I'm thinking of top 9, not #18, and this is a great opportunity to grab some cabbage. | ||

| I think you have to call all-in here. The way i see it, if he had a pair higher than yours he would most likely limp or put in a small raise to try and entice someone to come for a bigger raise at which point he could trap. His all-in raise IMO means "I have been watching everyone else steal the blinds so I will do it too with my low pair or overcards." Also, you have less than 2 laps left to play and in 9 hands doubling up will only buy you 10 more hands, so you need to make a stand. If you hit and win, you can probably wait out some others to make the final table too. I just think there is too big a chance that you won't see a better hand in the next 9 so you need to make your stand. | ||

| Tough situation. Personally, pocket jacks is my LEAST favorite pocket pair while pocket queens are my favorite. Everytime I get called or call someone with pocket jacks, they seem to have AA, AK, KK, or QQ. And most of the time, they get an A,K, or Q on the flop if I am holding two jacks. Either way, from what I see in your situation I would have called right here. The blinds would have started to eat at your chips, and if he DID have AA, AK, KK, or QQ then I think he would have made a strong bet instead of going all-in. Also, you have to realize that some people LOVE to steal blinds at this point of the tournament because so many people play super-tight waiting for that one person to get eliminated so that they are in the money. | Thanks for your response, below is the unfortunate results, after ponding for around 2 minutes, I felt that his all in was a bet he made hoping for no callers I put him on an Ace with a kicker less than a King but better than a 9....so I called he turned over K Q off, the flop was 9 5 5 turn 6 and the river was a Queen. So I finished 20th, but I felt I made the right call, and I was a slight favorite to win....... | ||

| Oh well. You were a 52% favorite going in, increased to 73% I believe after the turn. I'll take those odds anyday..............except Thursday nights on UB. Just kidding, this hand will be my doom (if neteller gets their crap together) on 14. | Yep, you had the right read at the wrong time. That's been happening to me a lot lately, last five tournaments in a row, I've finished 2nd table, when one table is paid. Except for one big tourney where I finished 3rd table when they paid top 2 tables. It'll come around, just play your best. | ||

| Mathematically speaking, it might be better to fold depending on the prize structure and how many stacks shorter than you there are. However, I most certainly would go with the JJ's in that situation because to me finishing any place below the top five is exactly the same, my only goal is to win outright, or get high enough that I'm at least making a decent amount. | ||
