| Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and thought I would introduce myself a little bit before I asked some of the questions I have. I have been playing cards with some friends for a few months now and keep getting my butt kicked. We meet every 3 weeks and play Hold Em for about 2 hours and then it is dealers choice for the last hour. After getting my butt kicked so much I decided to do some reading and I have been watching the WSOP on TV and the World Poker Tour as well. I also have been playing with play money on Yahoo Games. I feel as if I have learned quite a bit just from reading and playing online as well as watching TV but I am a little nervous about playing online. That is all...... BTW, I am 30 years old, married with a daughter | ||

| Hi, and Welcome - You'll get plenty of help from this site, no doubt about it. So much to say.......let's see. 1. Don't play with scared money. Since you had the guts to tell us you were nervous about playing on-line, don't do it. Self-control, holding your ground, and being patient with your poker is a good trait to have......so you're already on your way to improving!! 2. If you're playing with the same people and losing, they have become comfortable with either bullying you, or they know the cards you play, or your betting strategy on certain hands. First, change something, create doubt. Second, ask yourself if you recognize any of their traits. If not, you're ignoring the majority of what poker is about. Remember, the people that keep getting to the final table of these shows you're watching aren't there because they're lucky. Right? 3. Keep reading and practicing. If you saw one of those shows I saw, Howard Lederer said he lost his first 2 years playing low-limit poker.....and now he's a limit bad-ass. Start thinking a bit more advanced. You may have reached a plateau and you need something to shake things up. 4. Don't neglect your family. You're proud of your daughter or you wouldn't have told us about her. Poker is a game for some, a profession for others. Sure, we all want to win, but when you do end up losing, I'm sure it's all forgotten when you come home to her smiling face. See you soon. | ||

Self-control, holding your ground, and being patient with your poker is a good trait to have......so you're already on your way to improving!! I am nervous because it is online. How safe is it? How FAIR is it? I keep reading all these posts (i have been lurking for awhile) about how people are losing cause other players are playing crap cards and getting lucky, others are playing 7 10 and getting a stright on the river, etc.... 2. If you're playing with the same people and losing, they have become comfortable with either bullying you, or they know the cards you play, or your betting strategy on certain hands. Remember, the people that keep getting to the final table of these shows you're watching aren't there because they're lucky. Right? Let me put it this way - I just recently learned how to fold a hand :-) Seriously, I just had no experience whatsover and we are playing such low stakes ($0.25 - $1.00) with no blinds that I was constantly calling hands casue it was "only $0.50" if you know what I mean... 3. Start thinking a bit more advanced. You may have reached a plateau and you need something to shake things up. I just need to pay attention to the other players a little more closely and fold a lot more often. 4. Don't neglect your family. You're proud of your daughter or you wouldn't have told us about her. Poker is a game for some, a profession for others. | If you play at a reputable site, it is very safe. Many of the ripoff stories are by sore losers or other sites badmouthing new players like you to choose theirs. The reason 10-7 wins on the river online is some of the players are awful. If in holdem all 10 people called to the river, a crap hand would win quite often. Everyone loses at first, read books, then play for quite a bit at a level you can afford and wouldnt mind losing. Then re-read the books and suddenly they make a lot more sense. | ||

| jdavidk, Welcome. Please feel comfortable asking any questions you have. The people here are great. I've been posting here for a couple or more months and my game has improved dramatically from the thoughtful advice and ideas I've gotten from the gang here and from reading and watching TV. I'm sure you'll have the same great experience. BTW, anyone reading this please translate IMO or IMHO for me real quick. As long I've been here I never really asked. 29, married, no kids | ||

| I guess it could be either way. As a soon-to-be poker legend, I reserve the right to not be humble... LOL! Somebody tell Amarillo, Doyle and Phil to lookout... I'm sure they will be absolutely shaking in their boots. ;) -Moz "The reports of my assimilation are greatly exaggerated." | ||
