It's amazing how quickly things can change in a poker game. I was getting mediocre cards all night. I built my stack to a around $4200. At this point the game was at 300/600. I finally get dealt a good hand... Aces. I raise and have 3 callers including an all-in. The flop comes J-9-2 rainbow. It gets checked around to me, I bet and everyone folds. The all-in player had pocket Jacks to take the pot.

2 hands later I'm dealt Jacks. In late position, I raise to drive out the blinds. Even then I have 3 callers. The flop comes 3-2-7. It gets checked around to me and I bet. One guy folds and the other calls. I call down to the river to find that he had pocket 7's.

3 Hands later I'm dealt pocket Jacks again. I've lost half my stack in about 4 minutes. Again I raise to drive out the blinds. One of the blinds calls and a limper calls as well. The flop comes 5-5-2. The BB bets and the limper raises. What??? I reluctantly call. The next card is an 8. The first player checks and the second player bets. I call. The river is a 6. The first player bets, the second player raises and I fold. The BB had 5-6 (yes, he called a $300 raise to play 5-6) and the limper had 2-2.

Now I'm down to about 800. 2 hands later I'm dealt 10-10 in the BB. I raise to build a pot and I hope to get lucky. There are 4 callers in back of me. The table chip leader re-raises and I go all-in. The flop comes 5-5-9. I'm thinking maybe I have a chance. The next card is an ace and the river is some trash. I got beat with a pair of Aces.

So I sit patiently for 2 1/2 hours waiting for good cards and when I finally get some decent ones, I get run over. With a little luck on those hands, I could have doubled my chips and had a legit chance to make the cut. With the limits rising, players were dropping like flys.

Oh well. It only cost me $25 to enter. Them are the breaks.

That's top third. Is that any solace to you? Did you start with max chips?

I'm impressed. It was a crazy tournament. I was watching some of it last night. The blinds were 150/300 and there were still 950 players left. The thing didn't end until 6 AM Est. So... think of it this way. At least you got some sleep. And you outlasted 735 players. That would have been a good showing at the Big One!

Why?!?!? Do you really think that your overpair is good with a pair on board and a bet and raise to you? I would be away from that hand faster than coloured folk leave a KKK picnick.

With TT and your stack as it is you should be pushing all in preflop and hoping to steal the blinds here. You really don't want any callers and if you get them you want to be all in.

Remember that it doesn't matter how long you wait to get good cards and how good they are, you still need to be able to release them on the flop or later if circumstances are against you.
