So... now that I'm being forced to defend my crown in a game I've only ever watched on TV, I'm going to have to start reading up. Any opinions as to whether I should by TJ Cloutier's Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em or should I get Sklansky's Hold 'Em for Advanced Players. Or something else (I will eventually get both but I need a jumping off point. And I already have Super/System).

You are now free to discuss.

TJ's book is my favorite by a large margin.

Go to UB and play some $5+0.50 games with strangers for a while. The competition is really soft and you can get a good feel for the game.

Hey beigs,

I think Robert Varkyoni's poker coach is available... at a discount.

They are both good books. I also highly recommend Middle Limit Holdem Poker by Bob Ciaffone. It will improve your all around game and make you think of hold em a whole different way.

You think RV's coach can make it to NY in time? I doubt I could learn plays for every situation by the tournament, though.

Did wonders for RV.

I wonder why ESPN went ahead and ran all that crap about the guy ...... then showed him dump out early.

Could have saved him a little grief by not showing the coaching spot.

Depends on what game you will be playing. TJ's book is the best for NL and PL, but Sklansky's is best for limit. If it was a tourny, I would read both TJ's book and Sklansky's Tourny book.

Bottom line, all should be on the serious players bookshelf.

Both books are wonderful and should be purchased. Sklanski will provide you with a lot of game theory and mechanical decisions. I would study this book first. However, I think I learned more valuable insights from TJ and (Tom McEvoy). It seems unlike many other pro-players they are willing to share some real 'meat,' that will help you become more profitable. Again, I would read ALL of Sklanski, and TJ Cloutier's books. Hope that helps...

Bill A.
