WSOP 2003, SKinner, 9. Jul 2003 08:21

Friends,

Okay. I caught the WSOP on ESPN last night. We talk a lot of strategy here on this forum. Lots of intelligent people here with lots of good things to contribute. I have learned a ton.

However, I couldn't believe my eyes when I was watching the coverage of this tournament and Doyle Brunson is calling with T2 off. Other players limping in with small suited connectors, 79s and other such hands. If there's nothing else that I have learned from this forum, it's that such hands are junk unless in late position, already knowing that there are enough people in the pot to pay off your draw when you hit. I was so confused. I should add that this was at the very start of the tounrament.

Is it just a tactical difference between ring play and tournament play?
Do they gamble early, in an effort to get the chips quickly before crunch time, as Stidoh described in another post?
I don't get it.

Someone help me understand, please.

–SKinner

Does anyone know if this is a weekly show? I saw the schedule but they don't give episode numbers so I'm not sure what are reruns and what are new. Thanks,

Beigs

T2 is the hand that Doyle won the World Championship with, so he has a "thing" for it. Now, not that it makes it right to play, but he has gets so much respect that he can get away with it.

One thing that Sklansky points out in his tournmanet book is that if you are (or consider yourself) one of the better players in the tournament (NL only), you should limp with a lot of hands early on because of your ability to outplay your opponents for larger sums later on in the hand. I think many players take this to an extreme, but you were seeing this on the show a lot last night.

Also, during the first level or two of a tournament, it is sometimes good to advertise looser play so that you potentially can take advantage of it down the road at higher levels where the stakes are dramatically increased. The only thing you have to be careful of is making sure you can get away from the hand cheaply if someone else shows strength.

As for you and me who aren't professionals, I think it is better to stick to solid play except perhaps in the first level only where you can potentially see flops cheaply and maybe flop a huge hand. Otherwise, the best tournament strategy in NL in my mind is to aggressively pursue small pots while backing off at the first sign of strength from opponents.

I would highly recommend Sklansky's tourny book for all who don't have it. It has helped me immensely.

fyi, T2 is referred to as "Doyle Brunson". I believe he won 2 WSOP's holding those cards. Maybe he always plays that hand now.

Hmmm... sounds like a classic case of bad play being reinforced.

Because this is a no limit game, hand values change. Implied odds go through the roof so suited connectors increase in value. Basically you might not be getting pot odds to play them, but if you hit your hand you stand to gain a lot more. Now hands like T2 are still junk, but in general drawing hands can be played much more frequently. Stuff like 79s is a bit dicey, but there are places where I would play this too.
