Question-Lee Jones Book, JAYROC, 8. Jul 2003 17:32

I have read Lee Jones hold'em book and I have a question. It appears from his charts on preflop hands that you should call in middle position with KJ,QJ,and JT unsuited without a raise in front but fold these hands in late position with no raise in front. Could this be right? Am I reading the chart wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The way I read his charts is you raise with KQo and call with QJo and JTo in middle position or late position. Please remember these are just 'guidelines' or basic mechanics, not hard and fast rules to follow. Playing out hole cards depends on so many more variables as stated so often here.

Any hand that you will call with in early position you will at least call with in middle position - any hand that you will call with in middle position you will at least call with in late position, etc.

When it comes to raising this changes a little, however. For instance with QQ you would reraise in early, middle, or late position, but would not reraise out of the BB. The reason is simply that your raise won't knock any opponents out at this point and will only cause them to have more pot odds to draw later on if you flop an overpair and want to bet them out. There are lots of small considerations like this when it comes to knowing when to reraise, cold call, or fold, but when it comes to limping things are cut and dry.
