I advise $$ games. Tournaments have too much of a luck factor involved because of their structure which cause you to change your strategy from normal, solid play. It is better to learn the strategies of tight, aggressive poker in the cash games because you can afford to wait out bad cards (where u can't in a tourny). I have played semi-seriously for roughly 3 years now and have just begun to enter the tournament realm.

I would be interested in hearing others thoughts though.

I think it depends more on the person.

I personally like tournaments much better than $$ games. Single table tournaments v. $0.50/$1 games.

I do agree you have to be tight and agressive. But for me, it works better in tournaments. Hands that I would win with in a tournament do not seem to hold up very well in $$ games. Maybe because it's .50/1 games.

The most you will lose in a $5+1 tournament is $6. And you can get alot of action for that $6. If you play smart and tight, you will get to see alot of hands. Usually the first 3 levels are so cheap compared to your stack size that you can get in a few hands and not be worried about getting kicked out.

I have lost $6 in $$ games in 1-2 hands a few times. QQ on the button, to lose to runner runner flush. AK on SB to lose to runner runner straight from MP after A6 kept raising because A fell on flop. If MP would have folded, I would have won a nice pot. I think MP would have folded in a tournament hand.

Maybe because my $$ games are .05/1, they are frustrating. It's hard to protect top pair from a flush/straight draw. Much easier to do in a tourney. Guess I could go to NL $$ games. But I don't think that is anything for a beginner. Or I could go to a higher limit. But again, that isn't a good place for a beginner.

I guess it depends. Shorn is right that tournaments require different strategies at different points in the tournament, and that can be confusing. But you do get a lot of practice for a relatively small buy in (and no matter how many bad decisions you make, you lose only the tournament entry fee and no more). So I think the $5 and $10 tourneys can be a good place to learn to play ...... tournaments. You just have to realize that the strategy isn't always the same in ring games.

Personally I really like the single table tournaments. They are just more fun for me. I like that they have a beginning, an end, and a winner. I also like that after being patient for an hour or so, you end the game with shorthand and then heads up play, where you must be aggressive to win.

But I think you can do well either way, you may want to try both over time.

The best way to start, in my opinion, is the way I started - playing both. Get a home game together with people who won't crush you, have a cheap NL tourney, and then start up a limit cash game as people bust out. This will get you familiar with both games and there is a lot of cross-education that way.
