Did I overplay this?, mongi, 6. Jul 2003 13:02

Im in a loose passive 4-8 holdem game. I raise utg with Qh Qc, six people call both blinds fold. The flop comes 5h 6d 7s. I bet two players call and the player on the button raises. This player played any two card so he could have anything; two pair, top pair, straight, overpair. I reraised trying to get the other two players out. One of them folded the other called and the button capped the betting, we all called. At this point I put him on either two pair or a straight. The turn pairs the board with a 6c. I check the other player checked and the button bet. I called and the other player folded. The river brings 6s. Now Im thinking he did have a straight and bet, he raises. Now I am thinking that this guy has got to know I have a big pair. Maybe he has a bigger pair? or maybe he has the case 6. I just called and sure enough he throws over 56.

How would you have played this?

Well your thinking was correct but that means you need to lay your hand down. The flop bet and reraise were what you needed to do to define your hand and his, but when he caps it you need to lay your hand down. You were absolutley correct when you thought he either had the 2 pair or the straight, but that means you need to lay your hand down and not try to get lucky.

I think that you made the 3-bet on the flop for a good reason. There are going to be too many draws out there that hurt you and you managed to fold somebody off so fair enough. Now when he caps the flop it is time to worry - I would fear either a set or a made straight, but since he's a bad player, 2 pair isn't impossible. Now when the board pairs, if he's made 3 pair you've got him, but I don't think that it is time to bet out again. I would check around to the bettor here and then just call his bet. There is too much money in the pot now to fold off any draws and you a unlikely to have the best of it.

Now when the river brings a 6, you are looking pretty good in terms of 6's full of queens. You can be fairly sure that nobody has KK or AA, but your opponent could have 77 still to beat you. Or any hand with a 6. I'd say that again you can check around here and call a river bet, but I wouldn't bet out.

I think an alternative to your play would be to check the flop since you are first to act with 6 players behind you because this is a very troublesome flop with so many people in. See how the betting goes on the flop and if the last or next to last player bets then you can raise to force the inbetween players to call two bets cold if they want to draw. If the better then 3 bets you I might lay the hand down right there because you very well may be drawing dead or near it because very few players at 48 are going to make a reraise without something pretty significant. I think this is a serious problem which many people have in that they can't lay down an over pair when they know they are beat, save your money for a better situation.

In a loose/passive such as you've described, this is a terrible flop for you. You could easily be drawing dead, or close to dead. When I encounter this situation, I generally want to lead on the flop, but back right down if someone else shows strength. The problem here is that there's a decent chance you're currently good, but SOOO many cards can come to kill your hand: any 4, 8 or 9 and you're surely pooched, and any 3, 5, 6, 7, T, K or A isn't wonderful either. Those are a LOT of cards. Ideally, you'd like to bet the flop and have over half the field fold, but this isn't likely to happen in a loose-passive low limit game.

In conclusion, yes I think you overplayed this. You probably should have just mucked the flop when you were raised. But since you opted to continue, you were right in 3-betting and not just calling the raise.

I think the key word was LOOSE.

With that many callers you were flop dead and just a common chaser at that point...

Fold that earlier or except the consequences....

Odds were against you and the turn and burn were flukes and too many was after flop for you to be hanged and not enough to help ya.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
