| The past few weeks, I've decided I want to play excellent poker, to the best of my abilities. It sounds so stupid, of course, we all want to play excellent poker! The thing is, I would do somethign stupid and break my discpline at least once or twice per session. "Sure, I'll play A-rag suited UTG, it'll work out ok." Or, "These pocket 4's might flop a set and I'd win a huge pot, I should definately call that raise!" One mistake per session is all it took to waste a significant amount of profit. However, the past few weeks, I've been playing smart. I fold small pairs in early position, like I've known I should do for so long. I don't call in late position with suited connectors if there's only one other person in the pot. I fold my decent but not amazing hands to a turn raise when I think I'm beaten. I don't try tricky plays against unsophisticated players. I guess the point of all this is that I'm sure there's at least a few others out there that have the same problem I have. No, it's not completely gone. I don't think it will ever go away completely. But my profits have gone up noticably, and I feel better when I'm playing and after I'm done. Also, thanks to the UPF population in general. It's posts here that have helped my game a lot in the discipline department, and I've come to learn that discipline is the biggest part of beating any game. So thanks, looking forward to many more profitable sessions and posts on UPF! Lee | ||

| Lee, Knowledge, experience, bankroll, discipline. It's good to hear you say that you had the ability to possess all those elements, keep it up. Take away discipline and you will eventually take away your bankroll. And I feel, "what good will it do you if you have the knowledge and the experience, if you have no where to play?" They are all equally important to being a winning player, and without one of them.....you would suffer tremendously. 4 POKER | ||

| Don't be too quick to chuck AX suited UTG. If you're playing at a tightish table then get rid of it, but if you're up against a loose passive field that will go 7 handed into any flop, then this is totally ok to play here. | ||

Now... if you have AX suited UTG or other EP and it is a loose table with 6 or 7 callers, do you keep it if the pot is raised? | ||

| Absolutely. You're getting odds to call that raise and look for a flush. If you don't flop a flush draw or 2 pair+ though then you have to chuck it to an ace high flop for certain. | ||

| Schuster: I have had similar revelations recently and have turned a modest investment into a nice bankroll. For me, I no longer get upset when I fold a hand and watch it go runner, runner to make my straight. I just laugh and am thankful that I didn't win such a hand because hitting those is a long term curse. I do play Ax suited in loose passive games UTG or in early position. It is easy to get away from after the flop, same thing with small pairs (I have basically been treating them the same). No set no bet on the small pairs. Easy to chuck. I found they are worth 1 bet in loose passive games where you get 5-7 callers preflop with few raises. On the rare occasion when there is a raise, the discipline is throwing them away for the 2nd bet. I will never play those hands against players that like to raise preflop though and in aggressive games. Anyway, like you, this forum has been invaluable to me and I feel like I am taking the next step as a player. | ||
