Am I ready for real money online play?, Robbins, 5. Jul 2003 15:03

I've been studying the texas nl holdem game for a few months now. I've bought and read some books and have been playing online for play money quite a bit.
I know play money is a TOTALLY different type of thing but anytime I enter a .50/1 game with $25, I always finish with $200-$300 and bankrupt most everyone at the table.

Am I ready for a real money game yet?

Thanks in advance.

Purchase a copy of Wilson's Turbo Texas Hold'em V5 and/or Wilson's Tournament Texas Hold'em for about $70 each and practice for another few months, it'll probably work out cheaper in the long run.

Allyc.

Robbins,

I just edieted this post 'cause I misunderstood you....sorry. I read that you were playing 25c-50c but I thought you were referring to real money games, so I will re-write my post so it can make more sense! (LOL)!

Robbins,

You're correct. Play money is different but it is still a good way for you to gain the practice that you may need right now. But real money plays much differently because you'll find that in play money games, most of them will call with any 2 cards and will call all the way to the river regardless how bad their hands may be. Either they are just there to have fun (which is cool), or they are trying to learn too, but they may not be fully aware yet (knowledge) that their own holdings are not good enough....pre-flop and/or on the flop, thus leaving them in many more pots when in reality, they should have folded.

You're really not getting a true "read" of how you will be able to fair in a game that was played for real money. But you will get the practice that you need and if you can be disciplined enough (and boy, that's a good way to measure that now), and try and play hands that are winning hands (premium starters, understanding the importance of position and so on), then try to just focus on that. Forget about how the others may play because in play money games, their not playing their hands as you may play yours.....so just concentrate on your knowledge and what you have learned thus far. Incooperate that into the game, and forget about the times that you lose or win any one given hand because it won't matter here. If you play good poker and play good cards and play them correctly....then that is all you'll need to concern yourself with here. You're gonna take a lot of bad beats because all too often in play money, everyone calls to the river so your pocket Aces (for example) may have a tougher time now beating out an entire field. If it were real money, you would be able to gain better control over certain situations because the players will tend to play more correctly and will not be calling you all the way down with silly starting hands and such. (not that that is a bad thing when you're sitting there with A-A's, I'm just saying that the odds may go down a bit for you now because you're contending with too many other hands drawing against you).

But keep playing. Get the practice and keep reading. And when you're up to it, observe the real money games too. You can learn alot from watching the other players. You can observe their week tendencies and you can also observe the really good/tight players too. And when you feel you're ready for some money poker (real $), then take a stab at a low limit game. Just buy-in for an amount that won't hurt you, that's all. And if you're able to extract a couple of bucks...then keep playing. Try to build up a little bankroll for yourself and before you know it,(as long as you're ready and have a good understanding for the game).........you may be surprised at your results. You'll never know 'til you try playing in the real money games first. You may have enough knowledge right now to sit in a game, so why not give it a go. Just play really low limit, only invest a small amount and if you like it and feel comfortable in that element, then good for you. We've all started somwhere and we've all paid our dues, too. "Winning Poker" comes from experience, so you're going to have to get your feet wet at some time.........if you think you're ready for some real action,,,, take the first step. Just don't get discouraged if things don't go as planned or expected. Keep reading, and keep playing.....it's the only way to learn, improve and get the experience that is needed to beoming a winning player.

Sure you're ready. Read one book and practice a little and you're ready - as long as you start small. Play in a low limit game where people want to throw away their money. Play in $0.25-$0.50 and it'll be a lot like playing for play money. Just don't jump into large amounts of money right away. You need to work your way up to it.
