| Where is the best place to find the satellites for the WPT tournaments as well as the other major tournaments, including the WSOP? Do you generally play the satellites at the host site of the actual event, in the immediate days, weeks, or month before the scheduled event time? Bill A | ||

| Hi Bill, Generally, tournament satellites begin a few days prior and continue throughout the event. In the WSOP in Las Vegas, for example, they have continuous single table satellites downstairs to qualify for the bigger satellites in the afternoon upstairs. That said, for events like the WSOP and the WPO, satellite action is year long. You can even try to qualify via the internet, which is what the current Poker World Champion (Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP, but you probably already knew that) did. If you want a list of some internet satellites, the gang at UPF can probably help you, but check first some basic sources on the net, such as www.pokerpages.com, www.cardplayer.com, and of course, ... this site. flintsword | ||

| Hey Bill, If you're referring to playing in "live" satellites then this is how it works: For the most part, when a casino hosts a tournament, say the WSOP, the satellites will usually take place one week before the actual tournament begins and will last until the tournament is over. (check out www.cardplayer.com for tournament/satellite schedules). They're listed pretty far in advance if you're interested in attending their "house". (casino). They may even start earlier for the WSOP, but for the majority of the casinos who host tournaments, they tend to start the satellite action only one week prior of the actual event. If you participate in playing a satellite and win it, depending on how much the buy-in was and what the payout is....they will give you a voucher which is your prize money. You can do 1 of 2 things: You can either take that voucher and use that for or towards the buy-in of a tournament in which you want to play in, or you can sell that voucher to somebody else. They would either give you face value for it or they will offer you a little bit less....it depends on the persons involved. There are many people who strictly play only satellites and never even enter any of the tournaments. They are successful at this because A) they have alot of experience in satellite play, B) they are only contending with a few players as opposed to having to beat out an entire herd as in a tournament, and C) they will always be able to just turn around and sell their vouchers. The tournament players look at it like this: by them buying the voucher off of one of these guys may save them a trip to the window so they don't have to stand in line and they also may be able to save a little bit on the buy-in as well, 'cause like I stated, many times the voucher is sold to them at a lesser price, not much less, just enough to make both parties happy. Now if you're referring to on-line, you can actually win a seat at the big event at the WSOP by playing in a tournament over the internet. Poker Stars offers the most tournament action so if you're interested in that, check it out. They (and other sites, too) will provide you with all you need to know about their tournaments and will keep you fully updated as to when the freerolls take place and everything else regarding that matter. (home page, tournament directory). You can also e-mail the site for further information...they will assist you. I think that by playing in a satellite, you can gain some experience with heads up play and the different types of strategies that are often found in tournament play. Hope this helps. 4 POKER | ||

| Thanks 4 Poker for the thoughtful reply. I am going to save this post for future reference. It really helped me a lot. I want to start playing in a lot of tourneys beginning early next year and I would like to find the most affordable way to gain entry. Bill A | ||
