TILTING AT THE TABLE, Giocatore, 4. Jul 2003 08:40

The following is an observation of mine that recently struck me while reading an article on Card Player concering such. Often, there will be someone at your table who is on tilt, on the verge of busting out, and more often than not, that person will do just that, yet occasionally manage to turn those few remaining chips into a nice sized stack. When I first started out playing online poker several years back, not being as discplined a player as I am today, I would stay at a table if I was running bad until I busted out before reloading or changing tables. Looking back on that, I realize that I have cost myself a considerable amount, but I now view it as part of the learning process. Every once in a while, even the most skilled and disciplined players, will go on tilt at a particular table. But nowadays, when I find myself in such a situation, I will do one of two things. Let's say that I buy in at a 3/6 HE table for $100. After a couple of tough beats and suck-outs, I find myself with $20 in front of me. If I consider the game to be good, that is, one that I know I can beat by playing good fundamental poker, I will reload for maybe half of my original buy-in so as to cover any potential huge hands. However, if I simpy feel that I don't have the best of it at that particular table, I will leave, taking the $20 with me, and seek a different game. Believe it or not, this adds up in the longrun. How many times have you seen someone with $20 throw it away with A-rag, chasing that elusive ace, and paying off a big blind who called with Q-10o, realizing that A-rag is on tilt and desperate to win whatever he can to stay alive? I'm curious to hear how the experienced players/posters here handle such situations, and for those of you who are still in the process of discplining yourselves, why you would throw the remainder of your chips away in such situations. The way I look at it, if I'm stuck $80 when the aforementioned scenario occurs and decide to book the loss for whatever reason, the next time I play, I'm satisfied knowing that I lost $80 as opposed to the full $100 buy-in. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance to all those who reply.

I agree with you 100%......no doubt about that at all.

If you honestly feel that you are not at a table where you can expect to earn (due to superior players or by just not feeling right about the game or your own play, tilt, tired etc.), then by having the strong willpower to just get up with that last $20 or how ever much it may be, is the wisest thing you can do, period.

And yes, all those times that you do take a smaller loss ($80 as opposed to the full $100 buy-in) will definitely add up in the long run because it's the same thing as being able to minimize your losses on a hand while you are STILL at the table playing. And a saved bet is money earned as well....indeed.

Free food?................What free food? No wonder why I needed an explanation!

The only free food I'm offered are those stale danishes they bring you after they've been hangin' around for 12 hours! Wow, gee, thanks!

Chicken wings....Ha! (where do you play)? (LOL)

Actually, my home turf is AC but the only difference between AC and Vegas is.... the danishes are a little bit fresher in Vegas, but not by much....maybe by about 3 hours or so!

Enjoy your lunch....Bon Appetite'.

Table selection is important, but I would not leave a table only because I was behind. When having a negative session I try to work out the hands more completely and think about the way they were played. I observe the players more carefully. I specifically look for hints that the "tuna at the table" is moi. If I am the lead actor for Charlie in tuna commercials at a particular table, I have two options: pick up the remains of my stack and change tables, or REALIZING I am at a strong table, decide to play on.

This decision process is important because the CHOICE will influence your play. Moving because you are low man on the poker totem pole and you want to make $$ is a perfectly valid idea. Then you are right that the $20 you pick up with you is $20 saved from a tilt-fest.

I often use situations like this to practice playing short stacked, to extract more juice from the table. That said, ... sometimes the cards decree that you are the lemon and the juice is yours. Handling the tough cards is part of the game. Fold more.

Suppose you have decided that you are in a table of poker heavyweights. Are they completely out of your league? Does one of them look like Roy? (In that case run away from the table and save your money ... hehehe) Or, ... perhaps, ... they are just "small B" better. You may decide to stretch your play and try a higher level for a while. Perhaps you are now ready to play at the next level. Then you should play on.

The realization that you are in a tougher crowd is important because you have to be clear with yourself that if you lose, ... the cards may have been worse, ... but you have to give your opponent's play some of the credit. Objectivity.

Your post sort of sent me down another avenue on game selection. Although I appreciate the idea of game selection to maximize earnings, I don't think enough players consider the investment potential of playing at higher limits to become a better player, ... thereby earning more in the future. Just a thought. Thanks for your post Giocatore.

Good points. The other night I was playing 4-8 HE and the guy next to me was down to $13. He waited for about 7 hands and then went all in after the flop. He chopped that pot and ended up with about $30. About an hour later he had $500 setting in front of him (hardly any of it was mine LOL) All he did was play extremely disciplined poker. It was almost fun to watch. I say almost naturally cuz I was at the table. Anyway, I agree with your point of not throwing money in the pot just for the hell of it. Good luck finding nemo out there.
