| I've been playing middle limit holdem, mostly, for the last four years. During that time I've had plenty of losing sessions and streaks and it hasn't been a problem. Over the last 60 hours or so I've been losing steadily. None of the individual losses are that big - most have been in the 20-60 BB range - but the cumulative effect is really depressing me. My discipline, normally one of my best attributes, has started to waver and I find myself making some weak plays which only serves to make things worse. What do you do in this situation? Take a break, move down in limits, surf the pain barrier? Advice & comments? Thanks | ||

| Taking a break is something that you are going to have to decide for yourself to do and if it will help you to sort things out. It probably will. I would take a break but I would take a complete one, mentally and all. Go on a mini vacation if you're able to or just hang out with some people you enjoy being with (outside the poker world, too), go on a bike ride or just go fishing and relax. Take some time off for you. Do not think about poker at all. Give yourself a good week or two and then you can go over what you may need to think about. You may have developed some lazy poker habits just from playing for four years now and you may need to sharpen up. Poker can become very monotinous after awhile and it's real easy to get burnt out, so just relax, clear it from your mind all together and when you're ready, you'll know. Go over some of your strongest attributes, yours being discipline, and give yourself positive affirmations and then try to work in some of the things that may be giving you a bit of trouble. Don't be hard on yourself, just be honest and fair. Maybe pick up a hold-em book again. Even an old one if you've got it, and go over some of the hand analysis and see if you're still on track. Sometimes we slip a little bit and that's ok, as long as you catch yourself from falling too far. Read some poker articles in magazines too. They're not real heavy duty but once in awhile someone will write something that can stick to the back of your mind (it could be the smallest thing), and that one thing could very well give you the boost that you need. A long time ago I read an article by Mke Caro. He said that when you lose a hand, that hand is over, and the very next hand that you chose to play should be treated as if it was the very first hand of your session. He was referring to not dwelling on the previous hand and allowing that beat to effect your play at the present time. You're even, period. You haven't lost any money at all for the session and just try and look at it from that perspective. Those were his words, pretty much quoted from about eight years ago and trust me when I tell you, my memory is not the greatest (except for remembering poker hands from ten years ago), but his article stayed in my mind from that day on and just those 2 or 3 pages that he had written was real sound advivce to keep your discipline skills in tact and it has helped me from tilting as well. If you need to step down a limit, then so be it. There is no shame in doing that at all. If you're a strong player, then BE that strong player and make it happen. But the only thing you can do to really give yourself that edge is to play positive poker and against really weak opponents. Make it easy on yourself to be a winning player.....at least try to. All the best .................and better results for a more proftable poker year ahead. 4 POKER | ||
