I thought it may be helpful if we were to share some of the tells we have picked up from fellow players throughout our poker careers. This might give us some ideas of what to look for. I have found three tells that so far have been 100% dead on.

1) Whenever this guy is betting a draw he will yawn. Whenever he has a made hand his mouth stays closed.

2) This guy starts to hum everytime he has a big pocket pair preflop
3)When this guy is in the small blind and decides to limp with a big hand he will look at the dealer with disgust and then say "well its only two bucks"

a funny thing happened to me the other day. I am in early position with
Ah Kh I raise a couple of early limpers and get a couple callers behind me. Two hearts come on the flop so I bet my big draw. No help on the turn but I continue to bet. The river is a blank, I suspect the two other players remaining in the pot missed their draws as well although one of them may have a pair. I check, the guy next to me ( a big time bluffer) looks at the board and squints then looks at his cards and then puts on an act like he just made his hand. " I'll bet" he proclamed. Now the guy to his left is staring him down and sais as though he has no idea that I am still in the hand " I know you missed your draw and so did I but I think my ace has you outkicked, I'll call" . So after all this information I surmise that I had better call. The first guy turns over Ac Tc
and sais "Ace high." the second guy acting like he just one the lottery throws down As Qh and yells "ship it". Now I have to admit I am feeling a little neglected here but boy was it fun turning over my AK for the winner. Now the guy with AQ is boiling mad and screams to me " how could you possibly call there with absolutely nothing after after we had both bet. I thought for a second and then decided to play dumb and say " I dont't know I thought AK is a pretty good hand I guess I got lucky.

The one I profit from is when 3 "low" cards flop, a lot of people jump back to their cards to check to see if they have any of them.

Sure, it could be a play, but 80% of the time that they show 'em, I find them with a Paint-Rag suited, chasing a flush. They rarely look back with higher pairs hidden.....or even 2 above 10.

They may have made a low pair with high kicker, but my low set or 2 pair are golden now, and I'll consider slow playing it if the competition is ripe. (Obviously doesn't work too well on-line)

That's a good point and I agree to that as well.

Most players are not that astute as to "look back" when they really do posses a monster hand....sometimes but not often. You're right.

One reliable tell that tells me someone is going to play a hand is that they will place a token or something on their hole cards, as if they were afraid the dealer might grab them. It may be even more reliable than a guy that grabs his chips as if he is going to call. The chip tell is sometimes used to mislead you. Hope this one helps. Anyone else ever seen this one?

That's a huge tell if that player doesn't chose to always put that token on his cards preflop. Man, you'd have to be a ding-dong for doing that. I know many players who put a chip or a little figurine over their cards, but they sure as hell wait until all action is completed before the flop.

yeah, i noticed myself doing just that. so i started randomly putting the chip on or not based on my high card and whether is was a certain suit or not. just to really mess with the astute players. Another tell that I have noticed at home games, especially when it is being socialbe is when a person tries to raise themselves because they assume somebody has raised them...that is usually a pretty good time to fold.

I use the chip tell as a play. Here's how....(thankfully, nobody plays with me yet)

1. Begin your game by not doing it. Nobody notices because nobody has a reason to.
2. On your first monster holding, place the chip. Some folks will perk up and watch you a little closer that hand. You keep betting, win or lose, and show those power cards.
3. You've planted the seed now. Chip means power.
4. You'll probably need a 2nd go at it to catch the people that weren't watching the first time, but after that, it's folding time for those that noticed......no matter what you have.
Just don't overuse it.
However, the first time you're caught, everything goes out the window and your opponents have to re-think their profile of you......a good distraction 2 hours into a session in my opinion.

I find that a lot of players with monsters will start watching TV when they are waiting for you to call their hands.
