when do you re-evaluate your game?, jdsalinger, 2. Jul 2003 11:57 | ||

| b&m poker and online poker has been real good to me this year. I worked as a C++ programmer during the first 6 months of the year while in school and I averaged $2500 a month from poker (mostly online). Well the end of may I started to notice a real decrease in winnings. I was playing more games, more fish than ever at party/empire and yet I was making considerably less. Made a lousy $350 the last 5 days of may while playing nearly 10hrs a day. Then June hit and even more fish at party yet I've made only about $650 for the entire month. Mentally getting real draining playing 3 tables at a time and thus getting 3x the bad beats. Was making good money playing sit n gos but without making much money I've tried the large 300+ field in the big tourneys trying to hit big and have had poor results. Placing in the 30-50th spots. I used to love the shorthanded games but can't beat them for any significant gains. 1 month and I've made a measly 650 putting in twice the hours, more fish etc. Making a living from poker is such a mental drain I think I'll definitely have to reconsider doing this for a living. | ||

| laptop with UXGA screen 1600x1200 resolution. Most tables at sites are 800x600 as I have played 4 at time without switching screens. Before I switched back and forth between games but you lose too much info. Plus I'll play maybe 1 ring game and 2 tournys or 2 ring games and 2 tournys. Pretty tight so it is rare for me to get involved in many hands thus I'm only actively involved in probably 1 table at once. I have all the notes and have played with everyone before so it becomes almost mechanical especially in limit HE. | ||

| First I think you have to realize that you will not be able to earn the same amount of money all the time. Some months will be more profitable for you and some months you can even wind up in the negative, it can happen. You may have to play for a year or two more before you can figure out a better estimate as to how much money you can be expecting to earn, but like I said, there will be swings. If you can chose games in which you feel you are a big favorite in (being better then the rest), then your own results will be better ($). If you chose to play in limits that best suit your style of play and best suit your own comfort zone, that too will help you. If you find that playing in three games at once is not working for you, then I would suggest changing that right now. If you find that a really loose (fishy) game is not the best game for YOU to be playing at, then switch to a game that you are comfortable with and keep track of the type of games that you tend to make the most money in. Also, you may find that after learning some of the other forms of poker, that those games may be more profitable to you, too...you never know until you try. Because we can not make money every time we sit down, even if you're the best player in the game and you play absolutey perfect poker.... the times that you are running really good in one session is the time to devote a little bit more time in that game. And when things aren't running as good for you, if you're still playing really good poker, then stay. But if for whatever reason you are not,(tired, aggravated, tilting, etc.), then you must quit that session and only allow yourself to play when you ARE getting the best of it from every angle. As far as re-evaluating your game?......I think you've done that already. Playing poker for a living is not easy and anyone who ever said that it was.....is not a professional poker player! All the best. 4 POKER | ||

| Yes, Omaha 8 is more stable than Hold-em and it is pretty easy on your bankroll. If you're interested in it, then study up a little bit. Rome wasn't built in a day! And once you do learn it completely, you'll say, "hey, this games great, it wasn't so hard after all"! It's just something new, just like hold-em was when you first started playing that. I think hold-em is a great game and I still play it...I love it. That's why it's so great to know how to play all the poker games....each one of them has their very own nuances and for me, it just makes playing poker that much more interesting. 4 POKER | ||
