| I was lucky enough to win a satellite and enter a $1000 No-Limit Holdem Tourney at Bellagio. This was honestly my first-ever no-limit tournament, so I was really in over my head. There were several poker champions and celebrities at my table. In any case, this is the hand I busted out on. I'm sure I'll be dwelling on it for some time, so I'd appreciate some feedback. Blinds are $50/$100, I've got $1900 in chips, which is slightly below average. UTG player, who also entered on a satellite win and I don't rate to be one of the better players, opens with a raise to $450. This is a bit larger than the standard raise. I smell a good hand but some weakness -- I read him to have a pair of 10s or so. I'm next to go, with pocket queens. I consider moving all in, but I'm afraid UTG might fold if I do. I consider smooth-calling, but I'd like it to be heads-up in case a K or A flops. So I decide to make a big raise, hoping that UTG will come over the top all in. I make it $1000 to go. My plan is foiled when the big blind flat-calls my reraise. This is truly chilling. BB is somewhat aggressive, but he seems positively excited, and I fear he's struck a gold mine with KK or AA. UTG calls, and we are three-handed for the flop. Flop is 8 4 2 rainbow. It seems pretty remote that either of my opponents has a piece of this, except perhaps a set of 8s. Big blind moves all in immediately. UTG thinks for just a few seconds and also moves all-in. I'm almost certain that I have UTG beaten. On the other hand, I'm pretty certain that BB has us both beaten. If I lay down my QQ, I'll have about $800 left, which would make me the short stack but far from out. If I win the pot, I'll be the chip leader at my table. Perhaps because I know I'm a long shot to win anyway, and this could be my ticket to survival, or perhaps because I'm too much an amateur to make this laydown, I call all in. Of course BB has KK and UTG has JJ, as I suspected. I should have trusted my instincts. Turn and river are no help and I'm out. Thoughts? Thanks, NiceFella | ||

| I think that you made a reasonable call here and it sounds like you played a good game. I don't know if I would be able to lay down my queens there. I would have figured that the flat caller was likely holding AK, probably suited or was holding JJ or TT. Normally a player with KK will push in unless he smells aces in which case he will fold. Especially with the two of you there he wants to isolate one of you with his kings. That said, if you think you have the other guy beat you're still probably better off folding him off his jacks and taking the money than competing. When he folds you have a 100% chance of getting all the money that is there. AA or KK appears at a full table less than once every 10 hands and since you don't have it and you don't think the bettor has it, that only leave players yet to act. Basically you're betting on them not having it and I think that pushing in here is the right move. Now had you pushed in, KK probably still would have called and beaten you, but you would have saved yourself a tough decision that you really couldn't get away from anyway. | ||
