Questions for the Pro players, Bill A., 1. Jul 2003 10:54 | ||

| Hello Folks, I have a dream to play professional some day. I have read all the books, used the Wilson software, studied a lot of theory etc. I have also recently completed logging over 1000 hours of live B & M play with good results. I played only 6-12 (Mirage) and 8-16 (Bellagio). I do intend to maintain my other career while playing poker. My ultimate dream would be to play in all the major tournaments. Here are my two questions. Please be brutally honest. 1. If I am willing to work night and day, can a full-time living really be achieved, day after day, month after month, year after year? 2. Is it easier to make a full-time living playing ring games or major tournaments? Thanks very very much.....You folks have been great.....I look forward to meeting many of you in the future. | If I am willing to work night and day, can a full-time living really be achieved, day after day, month after month, year after year? There are many different attributes that go into making a successful professional poker player. Although knowledge is certainly important, it becomes worthless without discipline and mental toughness. Keep plugging away at your game and see how things go. Keep working your other job and think of your self as a "semi-pro". As far as an answer to your question... this is something only you can answer. Obviously there are people who make their living playing poker. However, do you have the talent and demeanor to become a pro? Only time will tell. Don't rush your game. You have the rest of your life to play poker. As far as tourneys vs. ring games.... It all depends. Some people are great at tourneys but stink at ring games (and vise versa.) I've read on here that Phil Helmuth is a terrible ring player. I guess it just depends on the player. Anyways, I hope this helps. | ||

| Of course, it also depends on what "a living" means to you. If you're a partner in a big law firm earning $250K/yr, it'll be a lot harder to replace that income than if you're a working stiff making $35K. | ||

| I'm no pro but..... I know people who can live on $700 a month. So like mkpoker says, its all relative to how much money you need to "live". So if your willing to live in a boarding house and eat Kraft dinner, you might be able to become a pro playing $5-10, but if you have a wife and kids, you may need to beat the $30-$60 game. mark | ||

| 1. Yes, but it is the hardest way to make an easy living, to quote Amarillo Slim. 2. Depends on what you are better at. That is like saying, is it easier to make a living as a professional hockey player or baseball player. If you're much better at one than the other then it is easier to make a living at that ... but you need a bigger bankroll if you are a tournament player. | ||
