A couple years ago someone took all the bustout hands from about 5 years worth of WRGPT (World Rec.Gambling Poker Tournament - an e-mail based poker tournament) and analysed those hands to see what hand was most frequently held be a player that got busted. (You can search Google groups and find the post.) That hand: QQ. So, if you bust out with QQ, you know you are in good company. Why was it the most frequent? Probably because people feel it is good enough to move in with. Here are the top 20 most dangerous hands from that post: total hands: 4331 182 QQ (most dangerous) 174 JJ 168 AKs 164 99 156 88 153 KJs 147 AQs 144 77 138 JTs 136 KK 134 AQ 132 AJs 131 AK 128 55 123 ATs A5s 120 KQs 115 KQ 114 TT 113 AJ 111 A8s 107 AT Now about your play: Do I understand that you called 1.50 cold with about three players behind you left to act? (button, sb and bb) Or was it $1.00? Or did you open the pot? If you opened the pot, you didn't raise enough. If you cold called an opening raise you should have re-raised (I suggest the size of the pot). Your raise or re-raise wants to accomplish one of two things, win the pot right there or isolate the raiser (keep people from calling behind you) and define his hand. By just calling you are inviting people behind you into the pot, that is getting larger, for a cheap price. With regard to the call by the player with the open-ended straight: It was an attrocious call. He was getting 1.33:1 pot odds on a draw that he is about a 2.1:1 underdog to make and, since you are all in, he is not getting any extra implied odds if he hits. It is just fundamentally bad poker. | The reason I cold called was because i have been burned by this hand often lately, and wanted to see if A or K came on flop. I know, thinking back, this should not matter, but i also believed that by raising, i would not have pushed any aces out. thank you for the invaluable list of hands. Officially Licensed Dude | ||

| > The reason I cold called was because i have been burned by this hand often lately, No offense intended, but perhaps it is your play rather than bad beats? In a tournament, it's quite easy to open raise with a hand like AJ, AT, KQ, or even A9 if your position is good enough, in hopes that you steal the blinds. You (and other players) should not want to call raises with a less than premium hand, so you can raise with more hands than you normally would. If you reraised here, the only hands that will likely call you are AA, KK, AK, and maybe JJ (depends on the player). Calling with anything less is a situation I wouldn't like to put myself in. If I open raised with AQ and got reraised, I would muck in a heartbeat The only hands that will reraise are hands that totally dominate AQ. Taking the money before the flop is your best bet. Lee | ||

| No offense taken. That is why I posted cuz i am having trouble making this hand profitable. But i don't see people that follow the play you are describing. in example, today i got QQ and bet the pot as one suggested. someone raised over the top of me all in. Maybe I should have folded figuring him for at least kings. But it was nominal to call him at this point preflop. 240$$ for 6000$$. He had 99. turned quads. In most games i play, although mostly freerolls and cheap tourneys i see repeated moves of all in with 88 and up and sometimes even A 10 and A 9(without being in a position to immediately double up), preflop after they have been raised. Maybe I am overplaying for the competion I am up against. I do understand the concept of taking the money preflop and running, but I thought QQ should be more profitable than that. | If I'm at a full table, I'm cool with taking the blinds plus the original raiser's chips. It's only when I see kings or aces do I hope to milk them for a little more, but if I take the raise and the blinds anyway, then so be it. Would you rather win 100 chips 100% of the time, or 250 chips 50% of the time? In a tournament, I'll take the guaranteed 100. As far as the 99 vs QQ goes, you caught a bad beat. But you still made the right play as for reraising. One last thing, I reread my original post, and I didn't mean to come off as high and mighty, or any such thing. It sounded a bit harsh after I looked over it. I'm just a student trying to improve my game, and I do what I can to help others like you who've helped me so much. Sorry if you really did take any offense to it. Lee | ||

| I think you definately need to re-raise with QQ. You will have alot more bad beats with it if your not aggressive with it. mark | ||
