How would you play this?, FGH2345, 30. Jun 2003 00:17

Hey Guys,
Just had this happen to me tonight and wondered how everyone would play this. The game is No Limit Texas Hold'em. We started with 7 and it is down to 3 of us left. I get dealt pocket J's on the button, so I raise it 3 times the blinds. First off, I am thinking, if I knock them out right now, that is good because I take the blinds, and if not, I still can get out of the hand if the flop comes with overs and some betting. Ok, so the Small Blind calls my bet. Flop comes 8c, 6d, 2d. I raise all in, thinking my over pair is good right now when he checked it to me. I am dead even with the guy still in chip wise. He calls my all-in with J10 diamonds. Diamonds come on the turn and the river and I am out of there. Did I play this wrong or just catch a bad beat?

Also, The guys I play with play mediocre hands like that all the time to my big raises. Do I need to raise more or what? It seems like they always draw out on me and it is getting frustrating because I feel I am making the right raise, then they will get lucky and catch their cards. Should I play differently with these styles of players, or continue playing the way I am? I usually raise high pocket pairs and Two cards J or better. Also depends on my position, but that is the basic strategy, not considering who is in or position. Any thoughts that could help me out? Thanks for the advice.

There wasn't anything more you could do in that situation. You got all your chips in when you were the favorite.

In tournament play, you don't always want to get your chips in when you are the favorite. It would depend on a lot more factors (stack size, size of blinds, etc), but just remember that if you go all in very often, eventually you will lose the showdown. This is especially true when you are playing against people who you know will call your all-in bets.

But like I said, that could have been the right play; or, it might not have.

I think you played it the only way you could. You were strong at the flop and the odds were in your favor. The odds that he was going to flush were in your favor
