Are Mini-Tournaments Profitable?, Al, 29. Jun 2003 08:13 | ||

| Paradise Poker offers 10 player tournaments with $10 buy in + $1 fee,and other similar structures. 1st place $50 2nd $30 3rd $20. This requires a strike rate of being placed 3rd or higher of over 50% to stay above break even level. Is such a tournament structure profitable to a solid tournament player against average opposition, or is luck too high a factor? Regards, Al. | ||

| Hi Al, I can call you al can I ? Sorry couldn't resist. I find these tourneys profitable. Most of the time it is a question of patience to get in the money (sure luck is always a factor ). I almost only play NL wich is easier for me to stay in the game cause you can bluf yourself in the money or take big advantage of mistakes of other players.( and they make a lot.) Wich i find harder to do in limit games where you have to be more patience and hope your big hand doesn't look to scary after the flop. Mind you it took me some learning money to get at this level and i am still learning and i am not break even yet (after 5 years of playing i see a little light at the end of the tunnel ). i end up in the money every 2.6 tourneys i play on average wich is pretty good i think. I am having great fun in the proces wich for me is also important because i am no pro. tommyhawk | ||

| I play them exclusively and am finding them profitable. Since I play about 10 a day now... its amazing how after about 50 of them you really start to get the strategy involved and you notice how awful many of the players are at it. I wrote a post about strategy in them, that had other people's comments as well just about 2 days ago, so you can look at that for some guidance. Not the best in the world, but you should be able to make some profit off of it (just won 2 in a row actually) At the 10 dollar level, just play extremely tight in the beginning... only play hands that are good NL hands (any pp in the hope it sets as long as its not raised too much preflop, and suited connectors, or high suited cards ) and you will be able to show quite a good profit. editing note: I just won my 3rd mini tournament in my row, and had my first cash out of all profit from party poker (already cashed out my buy-in) I came back from 1,000 against 7,000 chips to win it. One reason. He was down to 610 chips blinds 250/500. He was the BB. I had K6 and raised, he just needed to call 110 more chips and he'd be all in, with the chance to get 1220 chips, instead he folded, and was left with 110 chips, and NO chance of winning. Its stupid plays like that that make them profitable. | ||

| Thanks for the replies, I should have pointed out that I play limit tournaments, but interesting information anyway. I'm having a pretty good run with these at the moment, and just wondered if it was down to short term luck. Regards, Allyc. | ||

| I have found a gold mine at Party Poker with the sit & gos. Lots of loose players so patience is a virtue with rewards. I usually play $5 and $10 tables. Yesterday I played 6 of them and hit 2- 1st, 2- second, and 1- 3rd. This will probably last until all the new players realize the $$ they have lost and the rush to Party Poker subsides. For now, it is a good thing. | ||
