My revisit to RGP, Mike Caro, 28. Jun 2003 22:23

| I just spent today visiting the newsgroup rec.gambling.poker for the first time in many months. I used to post there regularly and I even gave two keynote speeches to their annual gatherings. Since I now see so much hatred, so many lies, so much distortion on that forum, I thought I'd go briefly to war and fight back in their own language (but without the vulgarity). I'm disappointed to say that there were almost no rational responses or arguments. For anyone with a civilized soul, RGP has become a sewer. It's almost unbelievable and unbearable. There are some posters I respect who seem to be stubbornly hanging on. Beyond that, is RGP the unhappiest place on earth, or what? It makes me emotionally ill every time I visit there. How can there be so many miserable people in the world that even the most honorable folks in poker (friends of mine) don't dare post there? Is it a new sport, attacking the best among us? Doesn't it scare anyone that so many uncivil people are walking the streets? It scares me. Straight Flushes, Mike Caro | ||

Gary Darn it Gary... I was assured by my lawyer that I would receive 5cents each time my catch phrase was used...I still haven't seen a dime. lol Seriously though, I believe that poker in general has gained a momentum that will not easily be stopped. Our contributions, though small (an occasionally overlooked) , can only help the growing of your "garden." Back to the subject line. Mike...do what you want to do. More importantly...do what you can do. You are not responsible for the world. People will often think what they want to think...no matter what. Just contribute (as you wish) and then let it go. Again...just let it go. In time the r.g.p. will run it's course. You and a flight of Mike Caro's can not stop it, which ever way it decides to run. Keep being the positive influence that you have been. It is enough (more than enough to many). Thank you for caring about this game/sport/pastime/work that I love so much. - Nathaniel Brous

But I don't want to see RGP fail. I think it can serve a very important purpose. I just think it's grown too hostile. Where once lies and mistakes were corrected by trusted members, now they often go unanswered. That's too bad. I think what's happening to RGP is also happening to many other Usenet groups. But some hold together pretty well, and I'm hoping that RGP can, too. There are many wonderful people who devoted a lot of time to promoting that forum, and I'm still cheering for it to regain its former days of glory. Straight Flushes, Mike Caro

| Yeats is the correct answer. I didn't refer to any sources, so can I get a cut of the prize? on 30. Jun 2003 02:31 Sredni Vashtar wrote: > MC:"Agreed, Joe. But I don't want to see RGP fail. | before you offer money you need to come up with something much more obscure. I read this quote less than a few months ago but I cant remember where. something about gambling system sellers I think. on 30. Jun 2003 18:17 ODB72 wrote: > Yeats is the correct answer. | I have never really read or posted at RGP, but I am familiar with on-line forums in general. I have frequented gaming boards as well as computer HW and SW boards, and if it's one thing in common between all of them it's the childish and mean behavior by the posters. Unfortunately when people feel even a hint of being anonymous, their behavior tends to devolve into flame threads and constant fighting. It's always sad to see, especially if you put something into the forum to try to make it a good place for people to meet and share information. In fact, one of the main things that got me reading and posting here was the lack of that kind of behavior. I've seen a couple minor arguements here, but for the most part people are informative and respect other peoples opinions enough to disagree without resorting to name calling and cursing. I understand your disappointment, but it's a near to impossible task to keep a public forum clean and informative when many of the posters just don't care. Let's just hope that this place stays the friendly and informative place that it is. | ||

| All i know is that this forum is really good !!! Hats off Mike it has helped my game no end and also think that the balance of experience and beginners makes the forum accesable to all players. Also whether or not it was your aim to start with i feel that the community that has built up here is nice, for example the propsed meet up at next years WSOP etc... The one thing i would say is that i dont think we need to address the faults of RPG here, i believe it would be better the reflect on the success that you, Roy and everyone else involved has achieved in making this forum work. Many Thanks Chasepoker | ||

But part of me still thinks RGP is worth rescuing. So many of us put so much effort there that it seems wrong to surrender it to thugs. But, here I am back on UPF, and I'm happy. | I wish to thank Mike for the insights that he has given me about poker over the years. I just found this forum today and have to say I am grateful had been reading RGP and became disillusioned over the name calling and vulgarity on that sight.

| I also frequent RGP and have to say that it's pretty bad, sometimes; however if you go their with your "filter" on, you can find some pretty good poker knowledge. The problem is people like Russ, who reposts his same so-called "theories" hundreds of times, along with reposts of the same accusations against virtually ANYONE in the poker world who is reasonably well known. The bright side is that many of the people like Russ are virtually ignored by anyone with a brain. These posts often go unanswered just because nobody is even paying attention. | ||
